Professor Arun Kumar Basak Marks 85 Years of Scientific Excellence

Professor Emeritus Dr Arun Kumar Basak, a distinguished physicist and respected academic at the University of Rajshahi, celebrates his 85th birthday on 17 October 2026. Recognised for his dedication to teaching, scientific research and the pursuit of knowledge, he has made a lasting contribution to higher education and the development of physics in Bangladesh.

Born on 17 October 1941 in Radhanagar, Pabna, Basak has devoted his professional life to academic excellence and the advancement of scientific learning. As he completes 85 years and enters his 86th year, his achievements and long association with university education remain an inspiration to students, researchers and fellow academics.

His journey reflects the value of perseverance, intellectual curiosity and a lifelong commitment to sharing knowledge.

Academic Excellence from an Early Age

Basak demonstrated exceptional academic ability from his school years. In 1957, he passed the Matriculation examination in the first division from Radhanagar Majumdar Academy in Pabna. In 1959, he secured second place in the combined merit list in the Intermediate examination from Pabna Edward College.

He continued to excel at university level. In 1961, he obtained an honours degree in physics with first-class first position from Rajshahi Government College. Two years later, in 1963, he completed his master’s degree in physics at the University of Rajshahi, again securing first-class first position.

That same year, he joined the university’s Department of Physics as a lecturer, marking the beginning of a career that would span decades. His appointment brought him into the academic community not only as a high-achieving physicist but also as an educator committed to developing students’ understanding of science.

His outstanding results throughout his education reflected a combination of intellectual ability, discipline and sustained effort. These qualities would continue to shape his professional life.

Overcoming Obstacles to Pursue Higher Education

One of the most significant chapters in Basak’s life was his determination to pursue advanced studies abroad despite political and administrative obstacles.

In 1965, he received a scholarship to undertake higher studies at Imperial College London. However, his plans were disrupted when the Pakistani government of the time seized his passport, preventing him from pursuing the opportunity as intended.

The setback did not extinguish his academic ambitions. Following Bangladesh’s independence, he obtained a new passport in 1972 and travelled to England on a Commonwealth postgraduate scholarship.

He subsequently pursued doctoral studies at the University of Birmingham, where he earned his PhD in 1975.

His experience demonstrates how political circumstances can disrupt academic opportunities, even for exceptionally talented students. His eventual success, however, illustrates the importance of persistence in pursuing educational goals. The opportunity that had been delayed for years ultimately became a defining milestone in his scientific career.

A Career Dedicated to Teaching and Research

Throughout his long career at the University of Rajshahi, Basak played an important role in teaching physics and encouraging scientific inquiry among students. His work formed part of the wider academic tradition through which universities educate future scientists, develop critical thinking and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

Physics demands analytical reasoning, careful observation and the ability to test ideas against evidence. Teaching the discipline involves more than explaining theories and mathematical principles; it also requires helping students develop the skills needed to question assumptions and investigate the natural world.

The contribution of experienced academics such as Basak extends beyond the classroom. Their influence can be seen in the intellectual habits they encourage, the academic standards they uphold and the importance they place on independent thought.

He retired from regular teaching in 2008, concluding a significant chapter of his formal university career. His association with the institution and his contribution to physics remain important parts of his professional legacy.

Recognition of his scientific achievements came in 2006, when he received the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal. The honour acknowledged his contribution to physics and stands among the notable milestones of his career.

A Lasting Contribution to Science Education

The development of scientific research in Bangladesh depends on capable researchers, strong academic institutions and educators who can inspire successive generations. University teachers play a central role in this process by helping students acquire specialist knowledge, develop research skills and understand the value of evidence-based inquiry.

Basak’s career illustrates the importance of sustained academic service. From his early achievements in Pabna to his doctoral studies in England and his decades at the University of Rajshahi, his professional journey has been closely connected with education and scientific learning.

His experience also highlights the importance of access to higher education. Opportunities for advanced study can expand a scholar’s knowledge, strengthen research capabilities and bring new perspectives into university teaching. His doctoral training in the United Kingdom formed an important part of his academic development.

For younger students and aspiring scientists, his story offers a reminder that academic achievement is built through sustained effort. Obstacles may delay progress, but determination and commitment can help individuals continue working towards their goals.

Birthday Tributes and Best Wishes

As Dr Arun Kumar Basak celebrates his 85th birthday, the occasion provides an opportunity to recognise a life devoted to education, scientific inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge.

His journey from Radhanagar in Pabna to doctoral study in the United Kingdom and a distinguished career at the University of Rajshahi reflects the enduring value of education, perseverance and intellectual dedication.

A teacher’s legacy cannot be measured solely through qualifications, awards or years of service. It also lies in the importance attached to learning, the encouragement offered to students and the standards of intellectual inquiry that endure long after formal teaching has ended.

On this special occasion, heartfelt congratulations and profound respect are due to Professor Emeritus Dr Arun Kumar Basak for his contribution to physics and higher education in Bangladesh.

May the years ahead bring him good health, peace, happiness and fulfilment. May his academic legacy continue to inspire future generations to pursue knowledge with curiosity, integrity and determination.

Happy 85th birthday, Professor Emeritus Dr Arun Kumar Basak. May the light of your knowledge and dedication continue to illuminate the world of science and learning for many years to come.
