Musician Rehan Rasul has joined forces with Australian-based expatriate physician and singer Rapti Sarwat to release an original Bengali single titled ‘Durotto’ (Distance). Composed and penned by Rasul himself, the track features sound engineering and musical arrangement by Tasnuv Nawal, pairing two distinct vocal disciplines into a contemporary duet.
Rasul has steadily carved out an identifiable profile across the modern Bengali music industry, noted for his unconventional vocal styling, emotive arrangements, and introspective songwriting. He first caught widespread mainstream attention in 2018 with the release of ‘Baje Shobhab’, a single that quickly resonated with younger audiences. He consolidated that early success with a continuous string of original numbers, including ‘Rupkotha’, ‘Ochena Shohor’, ‘Onyorokom Khun’, and ‘Hi’. Beyond standalone singles, Rasul established his presence on the silver screen through ‘Ashbe Amar Din’, an energetic playback track featured in the high-profile film ‘Toofan’ and visualised on screen by actor Shakib Khan. His vocal performance on ‘Mayapakhi’, the title theme for a popular television drama, earned similar critical appreciation.
Sarwat brings an accomplished classical pedigree alongside a demanding professional background to this collaboration. A medical doctor by profession living in Brisbane, she works as a general practitioner and is an accredited Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Parallel to her clinical career, her relationship with formal music education spans several decades.
During her formative years in Bangladesh, Sarwat performed as an enlisted child artiste on Bangladesh Betar, rendering traditional Nazrul Sangeet, patriotic numbers, and folk music, before earning similar performance accreditation on Bangladesh Television. She attributes much of her foundational training to the late Ekushey Padak-winning maestro Sudhin Das, a revered scholar celebrated for preserving the authentic notations and original purity of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s compositions. Sarwat underwent rigorous training at ‘Agnibeena’, the prestigious music academy founded by Das, where structured classical instruction helped shape her melodic precision and vocal control.
Following an extended hiatus from active recording after her move to Australia, Sarwat returned to consistent practice. She now performs at regional diaspora events and curates vocal covers on her YouTube channel, where her interpretations of classic numbers such as ‘Bimurto Ei Rati Amar’, ‘Khachar Bhitor Ochin Pakhi’, and ‘Eka Achi To Ki Hoyeche’ have built a dedicated following. ‘Durotto’ marks her formal debut as an original recording artist, opening a fresh chapter in her musical evolution.
Reflecting on the track, Rasul explained that the lyrics explore an emotional dialogue between authentic Bengali melodies and the lived experiences of non-resident Bangladeshis adapting to life overseas. By pairing Rasul’s indie sensibilities with Sarwat’s classically grounded timbre, the track seeks to create a bridge between heritage and modern songwriting. ‘Durotto’ is scheduled for an official digital premiere early next month, launching exclusively on Sarwat’s eponymous YouTube channel.
