Remembering Jharnadhara Chowdhury, A Lifelong Champion of Humanity

Jharnadhara Chowdhury was one of Bangladesh’s most distinguished social workers, humanitarian figures and advocates of Gandhian philosophy. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to the welfare of the poor, the underprivileged and the marginalised. Rather than pursuing personal comfort or material success, she devoted her life to serving humanity, promoting social justice and upholding human values. Her lifelong contributions continue to inspire those committed to public service and humanitarian work.

She was born on 15 October 1938 in Kalupur village, Chandipur Union, Ramganj Upazila of Lakshmipur District. Her father was the renowned Gandhian Promotho Chowdhury, while her mother was Ashalata Chowdhury. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the ideals of truth, non-violence, compassion and selfless service, she embraced these values from an early age.

Following her father’s death in 1956, she joined the Ambika-Kaliganga Charitable Trust, now known as the Gandhi Ashram Trust, an institution founded on the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. It marked the beginning of her lifelong journey of humanitarian service. In 1960, she joined the Probhartak Sangha in Chattogram, where she became even more actively involved in social welfare and community development initiatives.

Alongside her humanitarian work, she continued her education. She completed her Secondary School Certificate at Dr Khastagir Government Girls’ High School in Chattogram, her Higher Secondary education at Comilla Victoria College, and later earned her bachelor’s degree in Dhaka. Combining academic knowledge with compassion, she established herself as an exemplary social worker.

During Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, she played a significant role in providing relief and humanitarian assistance to hundreds of thousands of refugees who had taken shelter in Agartala, India. Her tireless efforts in supporting war-affected people remain a remarkable example of humanitarian commitment.

In 1979, she returned to the Gandhi Ashram Trust. Following the death of legendary social worker Charu Chowdhury on 13 June 1990, she assumed the role of Secretary of the Trust. Under her leadership, the organisation made outstanding contributions to education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, poverty alleviation, microfinance, peacebuilding and rural development.

In recognition of her extraordinary contribution to humanity, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2013. The Government of Bangladesh honoured her with the Ekushey Padak in 2015 in recognition of her lifelong dedication to humanitarian service. She also received numerous national and international awards throughout her distinguished career.

On 27 June 2019, this devoted humanitarian passed away. However, her ideals, sacrifice, compassion and unwavering commitment to serving humanity continue to live on in the hearts of countless people. Her life’s work reminds us that a life devoted to the welfare of others is, indeed, a truly successful life.

On the anniversary of her passing, we remember this remarkable humanitarian with profound respect and gratitude.

Tribute to Jharnadhara Chowdhury.
