Ukraine has endured a major new wave of Russian aerial strikes spanning from the eastern region of Kharkiv to the western province of Ivano-Frankivsk. The bombardment unfolded just a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky undertook a diplomatic mission to Brussels to lobby European Union leaders for long-term military hardware, including advanced fighter jets and long-range missiles.
During the onslaught, President Zelensky claimed that several Russian cruise missiles had traversed the airspace of ex-Soviet Moldova and NATO member Romania before striking their targets inside Ukraine. While the Moldovan defence ministry confirmed that Russian projectiles had breached its airspace and announced plans to summon the Russian ambassador, Romania’s defence ministry disputed the trajectory, stating that an aerial target was detected launched from a Russian vessel in the Black Sea but never intersected Romanian airspace.
Against the grim backdrop of the conflict approaching its grim one-year anniversary on February 24, the White House confirmed that United States President Joe Biden will travel to NATO ally Poland between February 20 and 22. The American leader is scheduled to deliver a major address marking the anniversary of what Washington termed a brutal and unprovoked invasion, underscoring how international alliances have rallied behind Ukrainian sovereignty and democratic defence. Meanwhile, the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will deliver his own annual state-of-the-nation address on February 21, setting the stage for a parallel diplomatic and rhetorical chess match.
The latest aerial assault marked the first large-scale barrage since late January, when Western allies agreed to dispatch heavy battle tanks to Kyiv. Condemning the renewed offensive, President Zelensky framed the cross-border missile vectors as a direct challenge to the security architecture of the alliance, declaring that such state-sponsored terror must be decisively halted.
Civilians across the capital and other major urban centres once again scrambled for underground shelters as the country’s critical infrastructure absorbed the brunt of the assault. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Russian forces systematically targeted energy installations, deploying Iranian-designed explosive drones launched from the Sea of Azov alongside Kalibr cruise missiles fired from the Black Sea. Military officials reported a massive barrage involving up to thirty-five anti-aircraft guided missiles directed at Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, while air defence units successfully intercepted ten missiles directly over Kyiv.
These sustained military campaigns against power generation and transmission facilities have severely strained the national grid, plunging millions into darkness and freezing conditions over recent months. According to Prime Minister Shmyhal, the country temporarily lost forty-four percent of its nuclear generation capacity and seventy-five percent of its thermal power capabilities. Grid instability triggered by the shelling also forced the automatic shutdown of a reactor unit at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant, a development confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Despite these severe infrastructural setbacks, officials noted that heating, water, and electricity services remained operational for the vast majority of citizens.
The fresh wave of attacks follows President Zelensky’s whirlwind European tour, where he pressed international partners to accelerate military supplies before Moscow can mount a heavily anticipated new offensive in the east. While European leaders offered encouraging signals, divisions remain, with French President Emmanuel Macron cautioning that any transfer of fighter jets would not materialise in the immediate weeks ahead. Ground combat remains intensely attritional, particularly around the contested eastern town of Bakhmut, which has seen heavy casualties on both sides. Highlighting the immense material cost of the war for Moscow, a senior United States defence official noted that approximately half of Russia’s primary main battle tanks have likely been destroyed or captured since the invasion began.
Beyond the battlefield, the diplomatic struggle has extended into international sports governance. Addressing a virtual summit of sports ministers, President Zelensky reiterated his firm stance that Russian and Belarusian athletes must be barred from participating in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games, arguing that the mere presence of representatives from a state engaged in relentless missile strikes and violence undermines the foundational values of international sport.
