Journalist Gustavo Yarroch, speaking on Radio La Red’s programme Un Buen Momento, said the AFA remains clear in its desire for Scaloni to stay in charge. The uncertainty, however, appears to be centred on the coach’s own concerns about the next phase of the project.
Three issues are reportedly weighing heavily on his decision: the physical and mental demands of continuing an eight-year project, outstanding bonuses owed to players and coaching staff, and dissatisfaction with the quality and organisation of Argentina’s friendly opponents.
Eight years of pressure and responsibility
The first concern is related to the demands of leading Argentina for such a long period.
Scaloni has spent around eight years working within the national-team set-up. During that time, he has overseen a remarkable transformation and established a highly successful cycle. Maintaining that level of performance, however, requires constant commitment.
The next phase could be particularly demanding because Argentina will gradually have to refresh their squad. Changes to the team are inevitable over time, while younger players will need to be introduced and integrated into the existing structure.
