A fourth-grade schoolgirl has allegedly been raped after a neighbour entered her home while her mother was away at a local market in Matiranga, Khagrachhari. The incident became known in the area on Saturday, prompting strong public anger and concern.
The accused has been identified as Shamsul Alam, son of Khalilur Rahman, from Hajipara in Ward No. 3 of Tablchhari Union under Matiranga Upazila. He has reportedly been on the run since the allegation emerged.
According to information provided to the police, the incident took place at around 10am on 30 September. The girl was left at home while her mother went to the nearby market. Taking advantage of the house being empty of other adults, Shamsul Alam allegedly entered the residence and sexually assaulted the child.
The incident was subsequently reported to the family and became known locally. News of the alleged assault spread through the community on Saturday, leading to anger among local residents. The allegation has also raised concern over the safety of children who may be left at home without adult supervision.
Matiranga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahed Uddin said police went to the scene that night after receiving information about the incident. Officers spoke with the victim’s family and local residents to gather preliminary information about what had allegedly happened.
Police later conducted a search at the accused’s home. However, officers found the house locked and could not locate him. He has remained untraceable since the incident, according to the police.
The police are preparing to file a case against the accused, the officer said. Further legal action will depend on the investigation and the evidence gathered by the authorities.

Protecting the child’s identity, ensuring her safety and providing appropriate medical and legal support are essential during the investigation.
