A senior leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Faridpur has been sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment following a raid on an illegal pharmaceutical manufacturing unit.
Md Bayezid Hossain Shahed, 40, the senior joint convener of the NCP’s Faridpur district unit, was convicted by a mobile court on Tuesday evening for manufacturing and storing unauthorised, expired aphrodisiacs and dangerous alternative medicines. The court, led by Executive Magistrate Insana Tanjin Eco from the Faridpur Deputy Commissioner’s Office, also imposed a fine of 10,000 BDT on the accused, with failure to pay resulting in an extended prison sentence. Shahed was transferred to Faridpur District Jail shortly after the raid.
The operation targeted Shahed’s facility, M/S Janata Laboratories, situated in the Goalchamot Molla Bari Road area of Faridpur town. Law enforcement officers and district officials uncovered a large cache of unauthorised products being produced and packaged under unsafe conditions. According to tribunal records, the facility had been operating illegally since September 2022 without valid regulatory approval or quality control oversight.
During the search, authorities seized a substantial quantity of illicit formulations. The factory produced a range of unapproved products, including adult aphrodisiacs, unregistered ayurvedic preparations, and medicated products intended for infants, such as baby gel. The seizure of unvetted pediatric products has raised severe safety concerns among local health officials regarding the potential distribution of unsafe chemical compounds to vulnerable populations.
Executive Magistrate Insana Tanjin Eco confirmed that the enforcement drive was conducted under Section 6(1) of the Essential Commodities Control Act, 1956, following reports of illegal manufacturing activities. The act regulates the production, supply, and distribution of essential goods and medicines to protect public health and prevent market exploitation.
Shahed, son of Habibur Rahman, hails from Alphadanga upazila within the district but has been residing in the Goalchamot neighbourhood to run his business operations.
Addressing the arrest of a high-ranking local executive, Saif Hasan Khan, Member Secretary of the NCP’s Faridpur district committee, stated that the political organisation maintains zero tolerance for unlawful activities. He assured that formal organisational disciplinary proceedings would be initiated against Shahed following his conviction.
