Shopkeeper Fatally Hacked While Returning Home

A local businessman was brutally hacked to death while returning home late at night in Tangail Sadar Upazila, prompting a police investigation to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.

The victim, Masud, 48, was a grocery shop owner from the Kuijbari area under Magra Union in Tangail Sadar. His body was recovered by police on Sunday morning, 5 July, after residents discovered it lying beside a roadside between his shop and home.

According to family members and local residents, Masud followed a regular routine of closing his grocery shop at around 11:00 pm on Saturday before setting off for home. When he failed to return late into the night, his family became increasingly concerned and began searching nearby roads and surrounding areas. Despite their efforts, they were unable to locate him.

The following morning, locals found his blood-soaked body beside the road and immediately informed the police. Officers from Tangail Sadar Police Station arrived at the scene, recovered the body and launched an initial investigation.

Victor Banerjee, the investigating officer of Tangail Sadar Police Station, said that preliminary examinations revealed sharp weapon injuries to the back of the victim’s head and one of his ears. Investigators believe Masud was attacked by assailants who had apparently been lying in wait as he made his way home after closing his business for the day. After carrying out the fatal assault, the attackers are believed to have abandoned his body at the roadside before fleeing the scene.

Police have sent the body to the morgue at Tangail General Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to help determine the precise cause and circumstances of the death.

Authorities have not yet established the motive behind the killing, and no suspects have been officially identified. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including whether the attack was linked to personal disputes, criminal activity or other motives. Police have stressed, however, that no conclusions will be drawn until evidence has been thoroughly reviewed.

According to the investigating officer, several police teams are simultaneously working to identify those involved. Officers are gathering witness statements, collecting forensic evidence from the crime scene and analysing available information to trace the attackers.

Preparations are also under way to file a murder case in connection with the incident. Police have assured the victim’s family that every effort is being made to bring those responsible to justice.

The killing has shocked residents of the Kuijbari area, where Masud was known as a local grocery trader. The incident has also renewed concerns among local people over the safety of individuals travelling alone at night, particularly in less populated areas.
