South Africa Edge Bangladesh In T20 World Cup Thriller

Bangladesh suffered a heartbreaking defeat to South Africa in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup group stage at Lord’s, losing a low-scoring thriller in the final over. Defending a modest total, the Tigresses bowled with immense grit to take the game down to the wire. With South Africa needing five runs from the final six balls, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty pinned her hopes on star pacer Marufa Akter. However, Chloé Tryon struck a boundary off the very first delivery of the over, effectively crushing Bangladeshi hopes before sealing the victory on the subsequent ball.

Opening Disasters and Middle-Order Resistance

Having opted to bat first after winning the toss, Bangladesh endured a disastrous start to their innings. Opening batter Jakeria Anika (referred to as Jawayriya Ferdous in match reports) fell to the very first ball of the match, clean-bowled by a lethal, swinging yorker from Marizanne Kapp. Her opening partner, Taj Nehar, fared little better, managing just a single run before being dismissed.

With the team reeling at the hands of the Proteas’ bowling attack, Sobhana Mostary and Sharmin Akter initiated a slow rebuilding phase. The pair found boundaries hard to come by on a sluggish surface, prioritizing wicket preservation over quick scoring. Sharmin laboured to 22 off 29 balls before getting dismissed in an attempt to accelerate during the middle overs. Mostary anchored the innings, top-scoring with a resilient 42 off 48 deliveries. Late acceleration came from skipper Joty, whose brisk 20-ball 32 pushed Bangladesh to a competitive 117-5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Marufa’s Initial Strike Vain Against Proteas Calm

Bangladesh matched South Africa’s explosive start when Marufa Akter clean-bowled dangerous opener Laura Wolvaardt with the first ball of the chase. The spectacular dismissal galvanized the Bangladeshi side, who maintained disciplined line and lengths to frustrate the Proteas’ batters. Tazmin Brits scraped together 20 runs off 24 balls, whilst Annerie Dercksen anchored the chase with a patient 45 off 45 deliveries.

As the match approached its climax, the asking rate remained manageable but tense. Left-arm spinner Nahida Akter was the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers, taking 2-24, whilst Ritu Moni, Marufa, and Sanjida Akter Meghla claimed a wicket apiece. Ultimately, the calm heads of Nadine de Klerk (15 off 14 balls) and Chloé Tryon (8 not out) guided South Africa home with four balls to spare, leaving Bangladesh to ruminate on another narrow defeat.
