Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has officially registered for the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League (APL), opening the possibility of another overseas franchise opportunity in his growing T20 career. The APL authorities confirmed the registration on Wednesday, 23 September.
Taskin’s name was featured in a post on the APL’s official Instagram account, while the Afghanistan Cricket Board also shared the same information through its official social media channels. His registration means the Bangladesh paceman is now part of a large pool of players hoping to secure a place in the tournament’s first edition.
The player registration process for the inaugural competition has already closed. According to information provided by the organisers, more than 1,000 cricketers have registered for the tournament, including over 500 overseas players. The figures underline the level of interest surrounding the new franchise competition, particularly among international cricketers looking for opportunities in the shorter format.
The next major stage will be the player draft, scheduled for 27 September. That is when the franchises will begin selecting players, and Taskin’s participation in the APL will ultimately depend on whether one of the teams chooses him.
At present, Taskin has not been officially linked with any particular APL franchise. His registration, therefore, should not be taken as confirmation that he will feature in the tournament. The draft will determine whether he secures a place and, if so, which team he represents.
For Taskin, an APL contract would add another overseas competition to an increasingly varied franchise career. The Bangladesh quick has already gained experience in several international T20 and short-format leagues, including the Lanka Premier League (LPL), the Zim-Afro T10 and the Abu Dhabi T10.
Playing in another overseas competition would provide Taskin with an opportunity to operate in different conditions and against a wider pool of international players. For a fast bowler, such exposure can also bring different tactical demands, particularly in leagues where pitches, boundaries and match situations can vary considerably.
The APL’s inaugural season is attracting considerable attention because of the scale of its player registration. With more than 1,000 cricketers entering the process and more than half of them coming from overseas, competition for places is expected to be strong.
Taskin’s immediate focus, however, will be on the draft. Until a franchise selects him, his involvement in the APL remains unconfirmed. If he is picked on 27 September, the Bangladesh paceman will add Afghanistan’s new franchise competition to his list of overseas assignments and take another step in expanding his experience in global T20 cricket.
