Taylor Swift has added another streaming milestone to her career, with her latest song ‘Patient Zero’ reportedly becoming the most-streamed song by a female artist in a single day on Spotify in 2026.
The track was released as part of the expanded edition of Swift’s album ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore’, which arrived last Friday. The extended release features four additional songs: ‘Patient Zero’, ‘Cleveland!’, ‘Pink Clouding’ and ‘Babylon’.
The new material made an immediate impact on Spotify’s global chart. Soon after release, all four tracks occupied the top four positions on the platform’s ‘Top 50 Global’ list, giving Swift a particularly strong presence at the top of the chart.
Early streaming figures showed ‘Patient Zero’ had received more than 13.7 million streams. ‘Cleveland!’ had passed 9.6 million, while ‘Pink Clouding’ exceeded 8.7 million and ‘Babylon’ recorded more than 8.4 million streams. Together, the four new songs generated more than 40 million streams during the initial period following their release.
The figures underline the scale of attention surrounding Swift’s new material. Streaming performance is closely followed in the modern music industry because it provides an immediate indication of how audiences are responding to newly released songs across different markets. Swift has consistently maintained a large international audience, and the response to the expanded album has once again placed her music at the centre of global streaming activity.
Interest in ‘Patient Zero’ has also extended beyond its performance on Spotify. The song’s full music video received its world premiere during the MTV Video Music Awards, or VMAs, on Sunday night. The video features Hollywood actors Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell alongside Swift.
A 13-second teaser for the video was released on Thursday, offering only a brief glimpse of what was to come. Despite its short length, the clip featured several striking scenes. Swift and Johnson appeared in front of a mirror and were also shown underwater and near a grave. Farrell appeared in a number of similarly mysterious sequences.
The teaser quickly prompted discussion among Swift’s fans, who are known for closely examining details in her songs, videos and promotional material. Her work has developed a strong association with so-called ‘Easter eggs’—hidden references, visual details or unusual phrases that fans believe may contain additional meaning or connections to her wider body of work.
That culture of close analysis was also evident during an earlier sketch based on ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’, in which Swift appeared with actress Mariska Hargitay. Several unusual words and phrases used during the sketch, including ‘saccharide’, ‘Aries’, ‘from the vineyard’ and ‘north or south’, became subjects of discussion among fans.
Swift’s use of visual symbolism and indirect references has helped create a distinctive relationship between her releases and her audience. Fans frequently revisit promotional clips and music videos after a new project is released, looking for details that may connect different parts of her work.
With ‘Patient Zero’, the immediate streaming figures have provided one measure of the response to the expanded album, while the music video has generated a separate wave of interest. The combination has ensured that Swift’s latest release is attracting attention both on streaming platforms and among fans following the visual and lyrical details surrounding her new material.
