Teenage Cricketer Dies After Selection Disappointment in Maharashtra

A 17-year-old aspiring cricketer has died in Maharashtra after apparently taking her own life amid disappointment over not being selected for a higher-level cricket team, in a case that has shocked the sporting community and those who knew her.

The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday night in the Bajaj Nagar police station area of Nagpur. The deceased has been identified as Aditi Choukhandhe, a resident of Akola district who was regarded by her family as a talented young cricketer with ambitions of progressing in the sport.

According to the initial police inquiry, Aditi had been hoping to secure a place in a team that would allow her to compete at a higher level. Investigators believe she had become deeply distressed after spending considerable time training without receiving the selection opportunity she had been expecting. Police, however, have stressed that the investigation is still under way and that it would be premature to conclude that selection disappointment alone was responsible for her death.

Aditi had been living in Nagpur with her mother and grandfather. Her father, a contractor associated with the Maharashtra government’s Public Works Department, lived in Akola because of his professional commitments. She had passed her higher secondary examinations earlier this year and was pursuing her studies alongside her passion for cricket.

Her interest in the game was well known within the family. She regularly practised cricket with her brother and reportedly hoped to establish herself as a successful player in the future. For the teenager, cricket was not merely a pastime but an important part of her aspirations and daily life.

Police said Aditi had dinner with her mother on Wednesday evening before going to her room. She subsequently closed the door. At the time, her father and grandfather were not at home, while her brother had travelled to another city to play cricket. When the family members became concerned after receiving no response from her, the matter was reported and police arrived at the scene to begin an investigation.

Investigators have reportedly recovered a note that Aditi is believed to have left behind. According to police, she praised her brother in the note and expressed her wish to become a prominent cricketer. She also urged her brother to perform well in the sport and make their parents proud. The note is also said to have referred to her disappointment at not being selected for the team she had hoped to join.

Investigating officer Chetan Chauhan said the preliminary assessment was that Aditi may have taken the extreme step after becoming overwhelmed by her disappointment over selection. Police believe she had been waiting for an opportunity to progress to the next level and may have suffered significant emotional distress when that opportunity did not materialise.

Authorities are nevertheless examining the circumstances surrounding the case from a broader perspective. Investigators are expected to look into why Aditi had not been selected, whether there were any issues connected with the selection process and whether other personal, emotional or environmental pressures may have contributed to her state of mind.

The case has also highlighted the intense pressures that young athletes can face while pursuing competitive sport. For teenagers, selection decisions can carry considerable emotional weight, particularly when they have invested years of training and personal effort in the hope of advancing their careers. Setbacks, uncertainty and intense competition can sometimes become difficult to manage, making emotional support from family, coaches and sporting institutions especially important.

At the same time, police have cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions before the investigation is complete. Statements from family members, friends and people connected with Aditi’s cricketing activities may be recorded as part of the inquiry. Investigators are also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding her selection prospects and the factors that may have affected her mental and emotional wellbeing.

The tragedy has left Aditi’s family and those who knew her facing the loss of a teenager who had hoped to build a future through cricket. As the investigation continues, authorities will seek to establish the full circumstances behind her death and determine whether factors beyond disappointment over team selection played a role.
