Police in Pirojpur have arrested three men after recovering a foreign-made pistol, a magazine and 43 rounds of ammunition during a special operation carried out in Pirojpur Sadar Upazila.
The arrests were made as part of an early-morning operation targeting illegal firearms, narcotics and criminal activities, according to local police.
The details were disclosed at a press briefing held at Pirojpur Sadar Police Station on Friday (3 July), where Superintendent of Police Mohammad Monjur Ahmed Siddiqui outlined the sequence of events that led to the recovery of the weapon and ammunition.
According to the police chief, the operation was conducted under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shariful Islam of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station. The team also included Police Inspector (Investigation) SI Radha Raman Bhowmik and other members of the station’s operational unit. Officers were carrying out a planned drive aimed at recovering illegal arms and narcotics while apprehending individuals suspected of involvement in criminal activities.
During the initial phase of the operation, police detained two suspects in the Kadamtala Bazar area of Pirojpur Sadar Upazila. The detainees were identified as 27-year-old Md Hasan, also known as Mehedi Hasan, and Mohammad Al-Amin Sheikh. Officers questioned the pair after finding them suspicious during the operation.
Superintendent Siddiqui said investigators subsequently received information indicating that a foreign-made pistol and ammunition were allegedly being offered for sale for Tk30,000. Acting swiftly on intelligence gathered during the questioning, the police launched a follow-up raid in the Tetultala area under Tona Union.
The operation led officers to the residence of 40-year-old Ali Hossain. A search of the property resulted in the recovery of one foreign-made pistol, a magazine and 43 rounds of ammunition. Police then arrested Ali Hossain in connection with the seizure.
Authorities said legal proceedings under the Arms Act were being initiated against all three suspects. Investigators are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm, including its origin and whether it had been used in, or intended for, any criminal activity.
Police in Bangladesh regularly conduct targeted operations against the illegal possession and trafficking of firearms as part of broader efforts to maintain public safety and prevent organised crime. Officials say such operations are intended to disrupt the circulation of unauthorised weapons and reduce the risk of violent offences.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing, and police have not yet disclosed whether additional arrests or recoveries are expected as a result of the operation.
