Tk 10m Business Dispute Turns Fatal in Narayanganj

A 72-year-old woman was killed and at least four people were injured in a violent clash between two groups over a business debt in Mahmudpur, Narayanganj. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over approximately Tk 10 million owed for a consignment of iron sold for a steel mill.

The clash took place on Monday night, 12 October, in Mahmudpur, Ward 20 of Narayanganj City Corporation. The deceased, Maksuda Begum, was the wife of the late Nazir Sardar and a resident of the area.

According to the victim’s relatives and police sources, Maksuda’s son, Joj Mia, had sold two truckloads of iron to a local businessman named Saddam for use at a steel mill. Saddam allegedly owed Joj Mia around Tk 10 million for the transaction.

On Monday night, Joj Mia went to Saddam to demand payment, accompanied by his mother, Maksuda Begum, and his brother, Russell. An argument reportedly broke out between the two sides over the outstanding payment. The disagreement quickly escalated into a physical altercation, with members of both groups allegedly engaging in a violent confrontation involving sharp weapons.

During the clash, Maksuda Begum and her son Russell sustained serious injuries from blows inflicted with sharp weapons. Saddam, who was on the opposing side, was also injured in the violence. Several other people were reportedly hurt as the confrontation escalated.

Local residents rescued the injured and took them to Bandar Upazila Health Complex. Doctors there declared Maksuda Begum dead upon arrival. The other seriously injured individuals received initial treatment before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital later that night for further medical care.

Officer-in-Charge of Bandar Police Station Jamal Uddin said the clash and subsequent killing were linked to a dispute over outstanding business payments. Police visited the scene after receiving information about the incident.

The victim’s body was recovered and sent to the morgue at Narayanganj General Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

Police are preparing to register a case and have launched an operation to identify and arrest those involved in the violence. Further details about the circumstances of the clash and the individual roles of those involved are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.

The incident has raised concerns among local residents, as a dispute over a commercial transaction ended in the death of an elderly woman. The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events and determine accountability for the fatal confrontation.
