Twenty-Two Illegal Gas Connections Severed in Brahmanbaria Drive

In a major crackdown on unrecorded energy usage, authorities in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila severed 22 illegal gas connections and fined six individuals a total of 60,000 taka on Thursday. The mobile court operation was executed under the leadership of Executive Magistrate Prince Sarkar in Hindupara village, located within Suhilpur Union.

The public relations department of Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited (BGDCL) at its Comilla office confirmed the details of the raid. Engineering teams and law enforcement personnel systematically removed the risers serving 22 unauthorised residential properties, permanently sealing off the supply by welding the pipeline access points shut. Over the course of the drive, officials seized three gas regulators, confiscated several metres of medium steel (MS) piping, and rendered an entire 400-metre illegal distribution network inactive.

Illegal natural gas connections remain a widespread issue across Bangladesh, presenting significant safety hazards and draining state-owned resources. Unauthorised tapping into major distribution lines frequently leads to dangerous pressure fluctuations, pipeline leaks, and an increased risk of severe fire hazards in residential communities. Beyond the safety risks, unmetered usage inflicts substantial financial losses on state utility corporations like BGDCL.

In recent months, regional gas distribution entities have intensified their monitoring and enforcement drives to eliminate illegal connections, protect to state assets, and stabilize pipeline pressure for legitimate, fee-paying commercial and domestic consumers. Following the successful enforcement drive in Hindupara, Bakhrabad Gas authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining similar drives across Brahmanbaria and neighbouring districts to deter unlawful utility theft and ensure strict compliance with national energy regulations.
