In a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of 14-year-old schoolboy Junayed in Moulvibazar’s Srimangal upazila, police have arrested two individuals and recovered crucial digital evidence believed to be linked to the crime.
Srimangal Police confirmed that the arrests mark a key development in the case, with investigators now focusing on reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to the teenager’s disappearance and subsequent murder.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Maruf (24), son of Churto Ali, also known as Churuk Ali, from Alisharkul village under Bhunabir Union, and Md Juel Mia (27), son of Torab Mia from the Bade Alisha area of the same union.
According to police sources, the suspects were detained on Tuesday during a coordinated operation in the Bhunabir area. The drive was conducted using a combination of technical surveillance and intelligence gathered from local sources, as part of an intensified effort to trace those involved in the killing.
Following preliminary interrogation, investigators were able to recover the SIM card used by the victim, Junayed. Authorities have described the recovery as a vital piece of evidence that may help establish communication patterns, digital movements, and possible connections between the victim and the accused in the hours leading up to the incident.
Srimangal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahirul Islam Munna stated that both suspects have been produced before the court. He added that, given the sensitive nature of the case, detailed information cannot be disclosed at this stage. However, he assured that the investigation is progressing steadily and that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend any additional individuals who may have been involved.
Junayed, a seventh-grade student and son of Dubai expatriate Ramiz Mia from Alisharkul village, went missing on 27 March in the evening after leaving the area near his home. Despite extensive searches by family members and local residents, he could not be traced at the time.
Two days later, on the night of 29 March at approximately 8:00 pm, police recovered his body from the Kamarpur area of the upazila. The discovery triggered widespread shock and grief across the locality, with residents expressing deep concern over the brutal killing of a minor student.
Investigators are currently examining multiple angles, including possible personal disputes, premeditation, and other undisclosed motives. Forensic analysis and digital evidence collection are also ongoing as part of efforts to establish a comprehensive timeline of events.
