A court in Mymensingh has sentenced two brothers to death for the killing of a teenage boy in a case driven by opposition to a romantic relationship between the victim and a minor girl. The court also imposed fines on the convicted men, marking a verdict that brings a formal conclusion to a case that has drawn attention for its disturbing circumstances.
The judgement was delivered on Thursday at around 12:30 pm by the Additional District and Sessions Judge (Acting) in Mymensingh, Samsuddin. Alongside the death sentences, each of the two brothers was fined 50,000 taka. The court further sentenced the girl’s father and uncle to seven years of rigorous imprisonment each, along with fines of 20,000 taka apiece. In default of payment, they will serve an additional six months in prison.
Court officials confirmed that three of the accused were present in the courtroom during the verdict, while one remained absconding. Following the announcement, those present were transferred to custody.
According to case records presented in court, the incident dates back to 19 May 2021, when the victim, 15-year-old Saikat Hasan, a tenth-grade student from Mymensingh Sadar upazila, was called to the home of the girl with whom he had developed a romantic relationship. The relationship reportedly became known to the girl’s family, who did not accept it. Saikat had reportedly informed a friend before visiting the house that evening.
He never returned home. His family began searching for him immediately, unaware of his fate. Two days later, on 21 May 2021, police recovered his body buried under soil, confirming that he had been killed and concealed.
Following the discovery, Saikat’s father, Akram Hossain, filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Police Station on 22 May, naming 14 individuals in connection with the crime. Investigators later submitted a charge sheet in January 2022 against the girl’s father, uncle, and two brothers after gathering evidence linking them to the killing and subsequent concealment of the body.
The verdict reflects the court’s acceptance of the prosecution’s argument that the crime was premeditated and carried out in response to a relationship that the girl’s family opposed. The case now proceeds into the enforcement phase, with convicted individuals facing imprisonment or further legal processes depending on appeals or sentencing review.
