Two College Students Die After Bus Hits Motorcycle

Two college students were killed after a Dhaka-bound passenger bus hit their motorcycle on Dharla Bridge in Kurigram on Thursday night.

The deceased were identified as Khalid, 21, son of Nur Islam, and Faruk, 25, son of Afsar Ali. Both were residents of the Kachichar area in Kurigram Sadar upazila and were reportedly college students.

The accident occurred at around 8.30pm on 17 September on Dharla Bridge, at the eastern edge of Kurigram town. According to police and local sources, Khalid and Faruk were travelling home from Kurigram town on a motorcycle when a passenger bus heading towards Dhaka struck their vehicle on the bridge.

The collision left both men seriously injured. People at the scene rushed to help them and took them to Kurigram General Hospital. Doctors at the hospital provided initial treatment but, given the seriousness of their condition, advised that they be transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for more advanced medical care.

The two injured men were subsequently taken towards Rangpur. However, their condition deteriorated on the way and both died before they could reach Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The incident has caused grief among the families and local community. The deaths of the two young men, who had been returning home from town, have left their relatives mourning the sudden loss.

Police said the bus did not remain at the scene after the collision. It fled the area, and authorities have so far been unable to identify or detain the vehicle involved.

Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident and the deaths. He said the bus had escaped after the crash and had not yet been identified or detained. According to the officer, legal action would be taken if a complaint was filed in connection with the accident.

The circumstances surrounding the collision, including the precise cause of the crash, have not yet been established. Police will need to identify the bus and gather further information before determining the circumstances leading to the deaths. No further details about the vehicle or its driver were immediately available.
