Two people were killed in separate road accidents on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway in Trishal, Mymensingh, on Tuesday morning. The deceased were identified as Marzia Khatun, 22, and Shahidul, 38.
The two accidents occurred at different locations on the highway, several hours apart. The first took place at around 5.30am near the Darut Taqwa Hifz Madrasa in the Sammukh Bailor area of Bailor Union, while the second occurred at about 9.45am near the house of a local ward commissioner in Darirampur, under Trishal municipality.
According to police and local sources, Shahidul was crossing the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway in front of the madrasa at around 5.30am. At that point, an unidentified ambulance travelling from behind reportedly struck him with considerable force.
He died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. The ambulance reportedly left the area after the incident, and its identity was not immediately established.
Shahidul was the son of the late Abbas Ali of Radhakanai village in neighbouring Phulbaria upazila. He had been living for a long time at his father-in-law Abdul Kuddus’s home in the Sammukh Bailor area of Trishal. He worked as a day labourer.
The second fatal accident occurred at around 9.45am near a U-turn on the Dhaka-bound side of the highway in the Darirampur area. Marzia Khatun was travelling in a van with her maternal aunt, Momina Khatun, 30, and her maternal cousin, Chadni, 15.
The three had left Marzia’s father’s home in Churkhai Konapara, within the jurisdiction of Kotwali Police Station, and were travelling towards Porabari Bazar in Trishal. They were reportedly going to consult a traditional practitioner.
While the van was passing through the Darirampur area, Marzia reportedly fell from the vehicle. An unidentified bus travelling behind the van then ran over her, killing her at the scene.
Marzia was the wife of Tamim Mia of Charkumaria village in Dhanikhola Union of Trishal.
Police later recovered the bodies from the two accident scenes. Sub-Inspector Sabuj of Trishal Police Station confirmed the deaths and said the bodies had been taken into police custody following the incidents.
As Marzia’s family did not raise any complaint, her body was handed over to her relatives without a post-mortem examination, according to police. Shahidul’s body, meanwhile, remained in police custody at the time of the latest information available.
The two incidents occurred on the same highway and both involved people travelling or crossing on the Dhaka-bound side. The separate accidents have once again highlighted the risks faced by pedestrians and passengers using busy highways, particularly where vehicles travel at speed.
Police have not provided further details about the circumstances of either collision, including the identities of the bus and ambulance involved. The investigation and any subsequent legal action will depend on the information and evidence available to the authorities.
The deaths have left the families of both victims mourning. For Shahidul’s family, the loss has come after years of his working as a day labourer, while Marzia’s relatives are facing the sudden death of a young woman who had been travelling with family members when the accident occurred.
