Two schoolboys were killed after being struck by an unidentified bus while crossing the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur, Tangail, on Saturday afternoon.
The victims have been identified as Rudra, 13, son of Dalim from the Jamurki area, and Jholok, 14, son of Panchu from Safipur in Gazipur. Jholok had been visiting Rudra’s family and was related to him as his paternal uncle’s brother-in-law.
The accident took place near Jamurki bus stand in Mirzapur upazila at around Saturday (26 September) afternoon. According to police and eyewitnesses, the two boys had gone to Jamurki market to buy some items. While returning, they attempted to cross the busy Dhaka-Tangail highway.
At that point, a Dhaka-bound bus approached and struck the boys. The impact left both of them critically injured, and they died at the scene, according to eyewitnesses and police.
The identity of the bus involved in the crash was not immediately established. Details such as its registration number or the identity of its driver were also unavailable following the incident.
The deaths have left the families of both boys in mourning. Jholok had been staying with Rudra’s family as a visitor, making the incident particularly distressing for their relatives, who lost two young members in the same accident.
Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur Police Station, said the relatives took the bodies to their homes after the accident.
The crash occurred at a busy section of the Dhaka-Tangail highway, where buses and other vehicles regularly travel between Dhaka and northern and western parts of the country. Areas around bus stands and markets can also see heavy pedestrian movement, particularly when people cross the highway to reach shops and nearby settlements.
However, the precise circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear. Police have yet to identify the bus involved, and no further details about the vehicle were immediately available.
The incident highlights the risks faced by pedestrians, particularly children, when crossing busy highways. In this case, the two boys were returning from a local market when they were struck by a Dhaka-bound bus, bringing a tragic end to what had begun as an ordinary afternoon outing.
