Two people were injured in separate shooting incidents in Dhaka on Saturday night, with a businessman shot inside his shop in Shani Akhra and a woman wounded by a bullet fired through the open window of her home in Darus Salam.
The first incident took place at around 8pm on Zia Sarani Road in Shani Akhra. According to relatives, the injured businessman, identified as Aslam Khan, runs a crockery business in the area.
Aslam was inside his shop and speaking with a customer when an unidentified man suddenly entered the premises and opened fire at him. The assailant fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Aslam was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. His condition was not detailed in the information available.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said a businessman injured in a shooting in the Kadamtali area was receiving treatment at the hospital. He added that the Kadamtali police station had been informed of the incident.
Police are preparing to file a case over the attack. The motive for the shooting and the identity of the person responsible were not immediately established.
Woman Shot Through Home Window
Around half an hour later, another shooting was reported in the Darus Salam area of the capital. A woman was injured when a bullet was fired through the open window of her tin-roofed home while she was watching television.
The incident occurred at approximately 8.30pm in the Matbarbari Mosque Lane area under Darus Salam Police Station. The injured woman was identified as Jasmin Begum.
According to her son, Yasin, Jasmin had left the window of their home open while watching television. At one point, unidentified assailants fired towards the house through the opening and fled.
The bullet struck her right hand, causing her to fall to the ground with serious injuries. Family members later took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was brought to the emergency department at around 10.45pm.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk confirmed that Jasmin was receiving treatment at the hospital.
Jasmin is originally from Uttar Dalla village in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district. Her husband is Abdul Mannan.
The two incidents occurred in different parts of the capital within a short period of one another. However, there is no information indicating that the shootings were connected. Police have yet to establish the motives behind either attack or identify the assailants.
The incidents have once again highlighted concerns over the circumstances in which firearms are being used in densely populated areas of the capital. In the Shani Akhra case, investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack inside the business premises, while the Darus Salam incident will require investigators to determine where the shot was fired from and who was responsible.
No arrests had been reported in either case at the time of the available information.
