Vinícius Banned for Four Matches, Set to Miss El Clásico

Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior has been handed a four-match suspension after pulling an opponent’s hair and protesting against the referee’s decision following his dismissal. The punishment rules the Brazilian international out of four La Liga fixtures, including the highly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona, dealing a significant blow to Real Madrid’s plans.

The suspension follows an incident during Real Madrid’s match against Villarreal on Saturday night. The disciplinary committee imposed a two-match ban for pulling the hair of Villarreal player Nathaniel Saliba, then added another two matches because of Vinícius’s conduct after receiving a red card.

As a result, the Brazilian winger will miss league matches against Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia. He is expected to return to domestic action against Celta Vigo in the 13th round of La Liga, with the fixture scheduled to take place between 20 and 23 November.

The absence means Real Madrid will be without one of their most influential attacking players for more than a month of league action. His unavailability for El Clásico is likely to be particularly concerning for the club.

The Incident That Led to His Dismissal

The controversy unfolded in the 70th minute of the match against Villarreal. Vinícius pulled Saliba’s hair during the build-up to a counter-attack that ended in a goal.

The incident initially escaped the referee’s attention. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, prompting referee Díaz de Mera Escuderos to review the footage several times. He subsequently showed Vinícius a straight red card, and the goal was disallowed.

The referee’s report played a central role in determining the length of the suspension. It stated that the ball was not being contested when Vinícius pulled his opponent’s hair. That detail was significant because disciplinary rules distinguish between incidents occurring during a challenge for the ball and misconduct unrelated to the contest for possession.

The committee therefore imposed a two-match suspension for the initial offence. Vinícius’s reaction after the dismissal then resulted in a further two-match ban.

According to the report, his behaviour was aggressive, and teammates had to restrain him. Reports also indicated that he confronted a La Liga official during the heated exchange and used insulting language towards the league.

These circumstances made it difficult for the player to avoid a lengthy suspension.

Real Madrid Consider the Punishment Excessive

Real Madrid are unhappy with the decision and believe the four-match suspension is disproportionate to the offence. The club has criticised the severity of the punishment, viewing it as a reflection of broader concerns about refereeing and disciplinary decisions.

The Spanish giants had anticipated the possibility of a lengthy ban but had hoped the suspension would be limited to fewer than three matches. A two-match penalty would have been considered an acceptable outcome, while four matches went beyond their expectations.

The club had also hoped that the disciplinary committee would take a more lenient approach to Vinícius’s reaction following the red card.

Real Madrid reportedly believed there was room to argue for a reduction because the referee’s report did not explicitly record the alleged abusive language. However, the committee ultimately maintained the full punishment after considering the report and the available video footage.

The outcome leaves the club with little choice but to reorganise its attacking plans for a demanding run of league fixtures.

El Clásico Absence Deals Madrid a Major Blow

Vinícius’s absence against Barcelona is arguably the most significant consequence of the suspension. The Brazilian has become a key figure in Real Madrid’s attacking system, using his pace, dribbling ability and movement to trouble opposition defences and create scoring opportunities.

Without him, the coaching staff will need to adjust their approach for one of the biggest matches of the season. His absence against Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valencia will also reduce the manager’s attacking options during a crucial period of the campaign.

Real Madrid have not announced who will replace him in the starting line-up for those fixtures. The team will nevertheless have to find a way to maintain its attacking threat without one of its leading forwards.

Vinícius remains available for Champions League matches, subject to the competition’s separate disciplinary regulations, as the suspension applies to La Liga fixtures. His immediate focus is therefore expected to shift towards European competition.

For Real Madrid, the priority will be to limit the damage caused by his absence and maintain their momentum in the domestic league. For Vinícius, the incident is a costly reminder that misconduct on the pitch, as well as a reaction to disciplinary decisions, can have consequences extending well beyond a single match.

With El Clásico among the fixtures he will miss, the suspension has created an additional challenge for Madrid ahead of one of the most closely watched encounters in Spanish football.
