The incident occurred at around 8am on 24 October near the DN Textile railway crossing, close to the Abhaynagar Upazila Parishad. The train involved was the intercity Rupsha Express, travelling from Khulna towards Jessore.
According to local eyewitnesses, the woman was seen sitting on the railway tracks at around 7.30am. At 7.51am, the Rupsha Express passed through the area, striking the woman. She died at the scene.
The circumstances that led to the woman being on the tracks remain unclear. Her identity was not immediately established, and no information was available about her home address or family.
Parash Islam, the gateman on duty at the DN Textile railway crossing, said the woman’s body had been torn into seven or eight pieces and scattered along the side of the railway line. He added that the incident was reported to senior railway authorities immediately after it occurred.
Mintu Kumar Roy, station master at Nawapara railway station, confirmed the death. He said he had received information that a woman had been killed after being struck by the Rupsha Express, but her name and address were not known at the time.
Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khulna Railway Police, said officers reached the scene after receiving the report and recovered the body at around 10.30am.
He explained that the extent of the injuries had made it impossible to identify the woman from her facial features. Police therefore collected her fingerprints in an effort to verify her identity against national identity card records and other biometric information.
The process is intended to help investigators establish who the woman was and facilitate contact with her relatives once her identity is confirmed. However, no confirmed identification was available immediately after the recovery.
The remains are being prepared for transfer to the mortuary at Jessore 250-bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Railway police said the necessary legal procedures were under way.
The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death have yet to be fully established. Although eyewitnesses reported seeing her sitting on the tracks before the train arrived, it remains unclear why she was there. Her identity and the details of the incident are expected to become clearer as the identification process and related legal procedures proceed.
