Allegations of Police Inaction and Public Protest

The family and neighbours of the deceased alleged significant police inaction following the assault. It is claimed that when Jobayer’s father, Jahangir, approached the Bandar Police Station on Wednesday to lodge a formal case, the police refused to record the complaint. A neighbour, Tipu, asserted that officers demanded money from a friend of Jobayer’s father when they went to register the case. The police reportedly declined to file the case because the demanded sum was not paid.

On Sunday night, when Jobayer’s body was brought back to Bandar from Dhaka, local residents erupted in anger. They gathered outside the Bandar Police Station with the coffin, besieging the premises and demanding accountability.

Official Response and Administrative Action

In response to the public outcry and allegations of professional misconduct, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bandar Police Station, Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin, confirmed that administrative action had been taken. Following directives from higher authorities, Sub-Inspector (SI) Masud Rana was withdrawn from the station for negligence of duty and attached to the Police Lines.

Addressing the protest, the OC stated that a crowd had gathered at the station, but they dispersed after receiving assurances that proper legal measures would be executed.

Regarding the allegations of refusing to file a case, the OC claimed he had no prior information about the family attempting to lodge a complaint. He further disclosed that one suspect linked to the mugging had already been arrested. However, due to the absence of an active case filed by Jobayer’s family, the suspect was forwarded to the court under a separate pre-existing criminal case. The OC added that the police would formally show the suspect arrested in connection with Jobayer’s death as soon as the family filed a regular case.
