A major cache of explosive-like substances and bomb-making materials has been recovered during a special operation conducted by the Rapid Action Battalion in the Shibganj Upazila of Shibganj Upazila, sparking heightened security concerns in the area.
According to officials, the operation was carried out late on Sunday night at approximately 11:00 pm in the 4 No. embankment area near a mango orchard in Kothanipara village under Ghorapakhia Union. Acting on confidential intelligence, a team from Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)—specifically RAB-5—conducted a targeted search in a suspected concealed location.
During the raid, law enforcement personnel discovered multiple abandoned bags and packets containing powders and various components believed to be associated with explosive fabrication. However, no arrests were made at the scene, as the individuals responsible were not present.
Officials reported the recovery of approximately 9 kilograms 150 grams of powdery substances resembling gunpowder, stored in four separate polythene bags in different colours. The recovered materials included black, white, and grey powders, all of which are now under forensic examination to determine their exact chemical composition.
In addition to the suspected explosive material, a separate bag containing items commonly used in improvised explosive devices was also seized. These included glass shards, iron nails, plastic containers, adhesive tape, and gas lighters—materials often associated with the construction of crude explosive devices.
Authorities suspect that the stockpile may have been intended for subversive activities, although the motive and individuals or groups behind the stash remain unknown. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible and to determine whether the materials are linked to any organised network.
Following the recovery, legal procedures were initiated at Shibganj Police Station, and the seized items are expected to be sent for further forensic testing by specialised agencies.
| Item Description | Quantity/Weight |
|---|---|
| Black powder substance | 5 kg 700 g |
| White powder substance | 2 kg 750 g (approx.) |
| Grey powder substance | 700 g |
| Glass shards | 1 kg 200 g |
| Iron nails | 400 g |
| Tobacco containers | 30 pieces |
| Adhesive tape rolls | 10 rolls |
| Gas lighters | 15 pieces |
Security analysts have described the recovery as highly concerning, noting that the combination of materials is consistent with components used in improvised explosive devices. They further warned that such stockpiling in a rural area could indicate preparation for potential acts of sabotage.
Local authorities have since intensified surveillance across surrounding areas, with additional patrols and monitoring measures being deployed to prevent any further security risks. Residents of the locality have expressed alarm over the discovery and have urged law enforcement agencies to swiftly identify those responsible and ensure their prosecution under the law.
The investigation remains ongoing as security forces continue to trace possible links and motives behind the concealed stockpile.
