Law enforcement agencies in Cox’s Bazar have arrested a 30-year-old Rohingya man following the widespread viral circulation of a video showing a bound six-year-old child being threatened with a knife during a ransom ordeal.
The suspect, identified as Jakariya, a resident of Block K-01 at Camp-18 in Ukhiya, was apprehended during a targeted raid late on Monday night, 27 July. Acting on precise intelligence, personnel from the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) conducted the operation at around 10:30 pm at a local tea stall in Block K-09 of the same camp. He was subsequently handed over to Ukhiya Police Station for formal legal proceedings.
The arrest follows a harrowing incident involving the abduction of six-year-old Rahmat Ali, son of Mohammad Junaid from Block E-4 of Camp-11. The young child was kidnapped on 22 July. Five days later, a distressing video clip surfaced on social media platforms, showing the young boy with his hands tied while his captor brandished a knife in front of him. In the footage, the terrified victim was heard weeping and begging for his life.
The perpetrators reportedly demanded a ransom of 3,20,000 taka for the child’s safe return. Paralysed by death threats issued by the abductors, the family initially refrained from contacting law enforcement authorities. The child was released and returned to his family on Sunday after the full ransom sum was paid. However, the online emergence of the torture footage prompted immediate statutory intervention.

Riaz Uddin Ahmed, the acting Commander of 8 APBn, confirmed that officers launched a swift investigation as soon as the video gained traction online. He stated that the force utilised intelligence networks, technical surveillance, and cooperation from local refugee camp leaders—known as Head-Majhis and Sub-Majhis—to trace the suspect’s exact whereabouts.
Commander Ahmed emphasised that specialized operations and intelligence monitoring within the sprawling refugee settlements remain intensified to combat organized criminal syndicates, extortion rings, and kidnapping networks, assuring that all necessary legal measures will be rigorously pursued against the accused.
