Fakhar Zaman Receives Two-Match Ban for Tampering

Pakistan international opener Fakhar Zaman has been handed a two-match suspension after being found guilty of ball tampering during a Pakistan Super League fixture, a ruling that has intensified debate over disciplinary standards in franchise cricket.

The decision was announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board following an official investigation into the match between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings, played on 29 March at the Gaddafi Stadium.

According to the match report, the incident occurred in the closing stages of Karachi Kings’ innings, just before the final over. On-field umpires reportedly noticed an abnormal change in the condition of the ball, prompting immediate inspection. After examination, officials concluded that the ball’s surface and shape had been illegally altered, leading to suspicions of tampering.

The matter escalated after video footage from the broadcast was reviewed during the inquiry. The footage showed Fakhar Zaman in conversation with teammates Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, during which the ball was being handled in a manner that drew the attention of match officials. While no single isolated action definitively proved intent, the combined circumstances were deemed sufficient to proceed with disciplinary action.

Following the umpires’ intervention, a five-run penalty was awarded to Karachi Kings and the ball was replaced in accordance with cricket regulations. That decision had a direct influence on the closing phase of the match, easing the pressure on the chasing side and shifting momentum at a crucial moment.

The case was referred to match referee Roshan Mahanama, who conducted a formal hearing. Fakhar Zaman was subsequently found guilty under Article 2.14 of the PCB Code of Conduct, a provision covering the deliberate alteration of the condition of the ball, classified as a Level 3 offence—the most serious category short of match suspension escalation or bans of longer duration.

Despite strongly denying any wrongdoing, Fakhar was sanctioned on the basis of the evidence presented, resulting in an immediate two-match suspension. As a consequence, he will miss two important fixtures for Lahore Qalandars against Multan Sultans and Islamabad United.

The disciplinary outcome also cast fresh attention on the match itself. In the final over, Karachi Kings successfully chased a revised target, with Abbas Afridi playing a decisive role. His aggressive strokeplay, including a boundary and a six, ensured victory with three deliveries remaining and sealed a four-wicket win.

Ball tampering is regarded as one of the gravest infringements in cricket, as it can artificially influence swing, seam movement and overall playing conditions. The PCB’s decision to impose a Level 3 sanction underscores its commitment to preserving fair competition and maintaining strict disciplinary standards within the PSL.

For Lahore Qalandars, the absence of Fakhar Zaman represents a significant sporting setback. As one of their most experienced and aggressive top-order batters, his unavailability disrupts both their batting structure and tactical balance at a critical stage of the tournament.

More broadly, the case highlights the increasing reliance on technology, including broadcast footage and forensic review of match conditions, in modern cricket adjudication. As franchise tournaments continue to expand globally, governing bodies are under growing pressure to enforce regulations consistently and transparently in order to safeguard the integrity of the sport.
