A violent robbery in Gazipur, Bangladesh, has resulted in the tragic death of a 55-year-old housewife after she was allegedly strangled by a gang of armed intruders who stormed a residential property during a night-time raid.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night in Pirujali village under the Gazipur Sadar sub-district, when a group of unidentified robbers broke into the home of Anisur Rahman, a night guard by profession. According to family members and local accounts, the attackers entered the premises during a widespread power outage that had plunged the entire village into darkness, creating an opportunity for the raid.
Once inside, the gang reportedly held the household members at knifepoint, threatening them into submission while they ransacked the property. Cash and gold ornaments were looted during the raid. When members of the household attempted to resist, the situation escalated into extreme violence.
The victim, Asma Akter (55), wife of Anisur Rahman, was allegedly strangled with a scarf-like cloth after she tried to intervene and resist the robbers. Another female member of the household sustained injuries during the attack and was later rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.
At the time of the incident, both the victim’s husband and their son, Sakib Hossain, were away at work as night guards at separate institutions, leaving the household more vulnerable to the attack.
Local officials confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the brutality of the crime. The chairman of Pirujali Union Parishad stated that he had been informed of the killing during a robbery attempt and described the event as deeply distressing for the local community.
Police from Joydebpur Police Station have confirmed that legal proceedings are underway. Authorities are investigating whether the incident was purely a robbery or if there were additional motives or circumstances involved. Law enforcement officials have also indicated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The killing has sparked fear and outrage among local residents, particularly given the level of violence used during what is believed to have been a planned robbery operation.
