Armed muggers intercepted a mobile financial service representative in broad daylight on Thursday, making off with ৳300,000 in cash, a personal handset, and additional funds in Bagerhat Sadar upazila. The brazen robbery occurred at approximately 11:00 AM along a secluded stretch of road between Boitpur Heremer Mor and the Bhadrapada ferry ghat in Bemorta Union.
The victim, Sani Jabir Badhon, serves as a Distribution Sales Officer (DSO) for a bKash distribution outlet based in the Nagerbazar area of Bagerhat. Following the incident, Md Humayun Kabir Kudrati, General Manager of the distribution firm Jabed Enterprise, lodged a formal written complaint with the Bagerhat Model Police Station.
According to the official complaint, Badhon departed his office on a motorcycle around 10:30 AM carrying ৳300,000 in a bag to execute his daily distribution rounds. Roughly thirty minutes later, whilst navigating the relatively deserted thoroughfare towards the Bhadrapada ferry terminal, six unidentified assailants riding three separate motorcycles abruptly blocked his path.
Describing the harrowing ordeal, Badhon explained that the gang surrounded his vehicle, threatened him with weapons, and forcibly seized the bag containing the official funds. The attackers then searched his person, taking an extra ৳2,000 from his pocket along with his mobile phone. Before fleeing the scene, the criminals removed the ignition key from Badhon’s motorcycle and hurled it into a nearby pond to prevent any immediate pursuit. Three of the perpetrators wore helmets, whilst the remaining three left their faces uncovered; however, Badhon stated he could not identify any of them.
This daylight robbery follows closely on the heels of another high-profile financial crime in the district. Merely two days earlier, a bank agent employee named Md Sajjad was reportedly abducted in Bagerhat town by individuals posing as Detective Branch (DB) police officers. The gang forced Sajjad into a white microbus near the Al-Islah intersection, assaulted him inside the vehicle, robbed him of his cash, and subsequently dumped him beside the Dhaka-Khulna Highway prior to Mollahat.
These consecutive incidents within forty-eight hours have sparked severe anxiety among local tradesmen and residents. Representatives of mobile financial services and banking institutions, who routinely transport substantial volumes of physical currency, have raised urgent concerns regarding public safety and police protection across the region.
Law enforcement authorities have yet to arrest or identify any suspects in connection with either robbery. Md Samsul Arefin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bagerhat Model Police Station, confirmed that investigators are actively collecting and reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas near the crime scene. Police assure the public that rigorous efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice swiftly.
