A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for four individuals arrested in connection with an extortion case involving CKD Urology Hospital in the Shyamoli area of the capital. The order was issued on Monday afternoon by a Metropolitan Magistrate Court after police sought custodial interrogation for further investigation.
According to court proceedings, seven people were produced before the court in total following their arrest over allegations of demanding extortion money from the hospital. After hearing submissions from the prosecution, the court approved a four-day remand for four of the accused, while the remaining suspects were placed under further legal procedures.
The case stems from an incident reported last Friday, when a group allegedly identifying themselves as affiliated with a political youth organisation entered the premises of CKD Urology Hospital and demanded five lakh Bangladeshi taka as extortion money. The hospital, located in Shyamoli, was established by kidney specialist Dr Kamrul Islam.
The allegations state that the demand for money created panic and concern among hospital staff and disrupted the normal working environment. The situation was subsequently reported to law enforcement authorities, prompting immediate action.
Following the complaint, a case was filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by a senior official responsible for the hospital’s surgical operations. Acting on the complaint, law enforcement agencies conducted operations and detained seven individuals suspected of involvement in the incident.
Officials from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) confirmed that among those arrested, one individual identified as Moin Uddin is believed to be the principal accused, while the remaining six are considered his associates. Authorities further stated that detailed identities and roles of the suspects will be disclosed at a later stage of the investigation.
The incident has also generated political reactions. Representatives of the youth wing allegedly linked to the accused group visited the hospital following the allegations and sought information regarding the incident. They assured that organisational action would be taken if any members were found to be involved, and emphasised that the matter is being treated seriously at the party level.
Law enforcement officials have indicated that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the incident is part of a larger organised extortion network. The remanded suspects are expected to be interrogated regarding the motive behind the alleged demands, potential financial links, and the involvement of any additional individuals.
Hospital authorities have expressed concern over the incident and stated that security measures will be strengthened to prevent any recurrence of such situations in the future.
