Five Dead as Returning Patients Perish in Kurigram Road Collision

The death toll from a devastating head-on collision between a stone-laden lorry and a microbus in Kurigram’s Nageshwari has risen to five. The victims, who included a father and his eight-year-old daughter, were returning to their homes in Bhurungamari Upazila after seeking medical consultations in Rangpur. The arrival of the deceased in their native village on Wednesday has prompted widespread mourning across the region.

The accident occurred at approximately 23:30 on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, in the Basherhat area of Nageshwari Municipality. According to emergency services, the microbus was transporting a group of local residents who had travelled to Rangpur earlier that day for various medical treatments.

Identification of the Deceased and Casualties

All five fatalities were residents of Bhurungamari Upazila. The deceased have been identified as:

  • Shamim Hossain (32), from the Asad Moar area.

  • Sadia Akhtar (8), daughter of Shamim Hossain.

  • Tamanna Akhtar (28), wife of Babu Miah.

  • Nurnabi Miah (28), son of Zahidul Islam.

  • Limon Miah (28), the microbus driver and son of Saifur Rahman.

Furthermore, nine additional passengers sustained various degrees of injury, with several reported to be in a critical condition. The injured individuals—identified as Hamidul Islam, Shanta, Somer Ali, Joba, Babu Miah, Monir Miah, Moon Miah, Shiuli Begum, and Siam Miah—are currently receiving emergency care at Kurigram General Hospital and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Sequence of Events and Local Impact

The fatal collision transpired when a lorry, heavily laden with stones and travelling from the opposite direction, struck the microbus with immense force. Witnesses at the scene reported that three occupants of the microbus died instantly upon impact. Two further victims succumbed to their injuries whilst in transit to Rangpur for specialised medical intervention.

By the afternoon of Wednesday, 29 April, the remains were delivered to their respective family homes. The sight of the five coffins returning simultaneously resulted in a profound outpouring of grief in North Tilai village. Mr Korban Ali Babu, a local Union Parishad member, remarked that the community is “paralysed by shock,” particularly given that the victims were returning from a journey intended to improve their health.

Law Enforcement and Legal Proceedings

The investigation into the collision is being spearheaded by the Nageshwari Police Station. Abdullah Hil Zaman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nageshwari Police, confirmed that the stone-laden lorry has been seized and taken into police custody.

However, the driver of the lorry fled the scene immediately following the crash and remains at large. Police have initiated a formal case and are currently conducting raids to apprehend the fugitive. While the wreckage has been cleared to restore traffic flow on the highway, forensic experts are expected to examine the vehicles to determine if mechanical failure or driver negligence was the primary cause of the disaster.

Azim Uddin, the OC of Bhurungamari Police Station, stated that his team is coordinating with Nageshwari authorities to provide necessary support to the bereaved families during the legal process.
