Primary Suspect Arrested in Gopalganj Over Jessore Gold Trader Murder

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has announced a major breakthrough in the murder case of 29-year-old gold merchant Al-Amin Hossain, following the capture of a key suspect in Gopalganj. Detectives arrested 30-year-old Golam Rasul during a dawn operation on Wednesday, 26 August, terminating a multi-district manhunt.

The arrest was carried out at a residence belonging to one Basu Sikdar in Puishur village, located under Puishur Union in Gopalganj’s Kashiani Upazila. PBI officials confirmed that during preliminary questioning, Golam Rasul confessed to his direct role in orchestrating and executing the lethal attack.

The victim, a resident of Purba Barandipara Mathpara in Jessore, was last seen alive on the afternoon of 20 August. At roughly 3:30 pm, he closed his jewellery shop in Jessore town’s well-known Swarnapatti commercial district and departed for home. He never reached his destination. Late that evening, local residents discovered his blood-soaked body dumped inside a private mahogany grove behind the Lichutola Madrasa in Purba Barandipara.

Upon notification, police officers cordoned off the crime scene, recovered the body, and transported it to the Jessore 250-Bed General Hospital for a forensic post-mortem examination. The victim’s mother subsequently lodged a murder complaint with Kotwali Model Police Station. Given the brutal nature of the crime and its impact on the local business community, the Jessore unit of the PBI took over the case to conduct a specialized inquiry.

Digital forensics and field intelligence soon revealed intense personal and commercial friction between Al-Amin and a faction led by Golam Rasul. The animosity had simmered for months before turning into a premeditated conspiracy to kill the trader.

On the afternoon of the murder, Golam Rasul and his associates telephoned Al-Amin repeatedly, persuading him to meet them at the secluded mahogany grove. When the victim arrived, the gang ambushed him. They stabbed him repeatedly with sharp knives and struck him with heavy bricks, causing catastrophic injuries. Statements from the suspect indicate that Al-Amin succumbed to rapid blood loss at the scene.

Immediately after the attack, Golam Rasul turned off his mobile phone and fled the district to seek refuge in Gopalganj. PBI investigators reconstructed his flight route using surveillance footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras along the Swarnapatti corridor, paired with cellular network tracking.

Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Masud confirmed that the suspect has yielded valuable details regarding the broader conspiracy. Detectives produced Golam Rasul before a Jessore magistrate court on Wednesday, requesting police remand to facilitate further interrogation and recover the weapons used in the assault. Special Police Superintendent of PBI Jessore District, Md. Kamrujjaman, stated that commercial disputes remained the primary catalyst for the attack, adding that law enforcement operations are continuing unabated across adjacent districts to apprehend all remaining accomplices.
