Complaint Filed Against Police Officer

A written complaint has been submitted to the Police Headquarters and the Ministry of Home Affairs in Bangladesh alleging serious misconduct, including physical abuse, bribery, and implicating an individual in false cases, against Md Jabbarul Islam, formerly Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shreepur Police Station in Magura district and currently serving with the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in Dhaka.

According to the complaint, the claimant, Sheikh Abu Saeed (27), son of Sheikh Amirul Islam Sakim, is a resident of Sarangdia area under Shreepur upazila. He identifies himself as a businessman and states that he is associated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party at the local level.

The complaint alleges that Abu Saeed became the target of politically motivated hostility stemming from a local dispute involving Swarnali Jowardar Ria, described in the complaint as a local political figure formerly associated with the Awami League and allegedly involved in drug-related activities. It is further claimed that this dispute escalated into coordinated harassment against him.

The complainant states that in January 2023, the then OC Md Jabbarul Islam summoned him to Shreepur Police Station by telephone. He alleges that upon arrival, he was physically assaulted, threatened, and intimidated while in police custody. He further claims that on a separate occasion, he observed a police vehicle outside the residence of Swarnali Jowardar Ria and saw the OC leaving the premises in the evening.

The complaint also alleges that he was threatened with being implicated in false criminal cases unless a payment of BDT 35,000 was made, which he states was collected from his father. Despite this, he claims he was subsequently named in a fabricated case and sent to prison. It is further alleged that his family members were also subjected to intimidation.

Additionally, the complaint asserts that Swarnali Jowardar Ria was engaged in drug-related activities in the locality and that opposition to these activities led to threats and harassment. It further alleges that after Md Jabbarul Islam took charge as OC of Shreepur Police Station, he developed a personal relationship with Swarnali Jowardar Ria, which later became inappropriate and influenced official conduct, according to the complainant.

The complainant further states that following the alleged exposure of this relationship, the officer’s then wife, Sonia, divorced him. It is also claimed that this personal development contributed to the officer supporting the alleged actions of Swarnali Jowardar Ria.

The complainant states that during what he describes as a politically repressive period, he was unable to seek legal remedy due to fear of persecution. He further claims that following recent political changes, he felt able to file the complaint seeking justice.

He has requested that the Inspector General of Police and the Home Affairs Adviser conduct a proper investigation and take legal action against Md Jabbarul Islam (currently serving in the PBI) and Swarnali Jowardar Ria.
