A Union Parishad member in Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria upazila has been accused of eloping with a married woman and subsequently contracting a marriage with her, according to allegations made by the woman’s husband and local sources.
Local accounts state that Mizanur Rahman, a member of Ward No. 7 of the Surajpur–Manikpur Union Parishad in Chakaria, is alleged to have left with Hasna Akhtar Rumi (28), the wife of a CNG-driven autorickshaw driver. The woman is also reported to be the mother of two children, while Mizanur Rahman is himself a father of three.
Following their disappearance, it is claimed that the pair later formalised their marriage through a notarised agreement and began living together in a rented house in the Sabujbagh area of Chakaria municipality.
The husband of the woman, Md Osman Gani (38), stated that he married Hasna Akhtar Rumi in 2012 through social and religious customs. He said that the marriage had lasted approximately 14 years and that the couple have one son and one daughter.
He further alleged that Mizanur Rahman developed a relationship with his wife during periods when he was away from home for work. According to Osman Gani’s claim, the situation culminated on 28 April when his wife left the home early in the morning, taking their younger daughter with her. He also alleged that she left with approximately 450,000 taka in cash and around 3.5 bhori of gold ornaments.
Attempts were made to obtain a statement from Union Parishad member Mizanur Rahman, but his mobile phone was found to be switched off or unreachable.
Rupayan Deb, the administrator of Surajpur–Manikpur Union Parishad and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Chakaria Upazila, commented that under applicable law, permission from the first wife is generally required in cases of a second marriage. He stated that it is not known whether such procedures were followed in this instance.
The incident has generated significant discussion and debate in the local area. Residents have called for a prompt investigation and appropriate administrative and legal action in relation to the matter.
