On occasions, he wakes suddenly from sleep believing he has scored, only to return to reality and confront the memory again. In 1985, after joining Fiorentina, he suffered a rupture of his cruciate ligament. He recalled a 12-hour journey to hospital in an old Ford car, during which he feared he might never play football again.
Following surgery, his condition required extensive medical intervention. His tibia was treated with approximately 200 stitches, reflecting the severity of the injury and the medical practices of the time. When he regained consciousness after the operation, he experienced extreme pain. He described waking from anaesthesia in severe distress, unable to tolerate pain relief at that stage. He also recalled telling his mother, in moments of intense suffering, that she should end his pain if she truly loved him.
The contrast between his footballing success and physical suffering highlights the challenges he faced throughout his career. Despite being unable to play during recovery periods, he reportedly refused to accept his club salary, citing personal principles and dignity.
Baggio has also spoken about the role of spirituality in his life. He credits Buddhist philosophy with helping him cope during his most difficult periods. He believes that inner strength exists within every individual and that this belief provided him with stability and resilience during recovery and professional setbacks.
