Fisherman arrested in Goaland with 100,000 metres of net, nets seized

In Goaland Upazila of Rajbari district, river police have arrested a fisherman along with a substantial quantity of banned monofilament fishing nets during a day-long operation on the River Padma. The drive was conducted on Monday (11 May) along the Daulatdia–Paturia ferry route and surrounding areas of the river.

The arrested individual has been identified as Masud Pramanik (20), son of Shahid Pramanik of Siddik Kazirpara village under Daulatdia Union in Goaland Upazila. He was detained on the spot during the operation carried out by the naval police.

According to official sources, the police recovered approximately one lakh metres of illegal current nets from his possession. The seizure was made during routine enforcement activities aimed at preventing the use of banned fishing gear in the river.

Following the arrest, the confiscated nets were destroyed by burning at the site. Authorities confirmed that legal proceedings are being prepared against the detainee in connection with the possession and use of prohibited fishing equipment.

The operation was conducted in a strategically important section of the Padma River, particularly the Daulatdia–Paturia ferry route, which is one of the busiest river crossings in the country, facilitating the movement of ferries and passenger launches.

Officer-in-Charge of Daulatdia Ghat Naval Police Outpost, Trinath Saha, confirmed the matter and stated that the operation was carried out throughout the day to ensure uninterrupted movement of ferries and launches. He added that the use of current nets in the river not only violates regulations but may also obstruct navigational safety in the busy waterway.
