Police in Chattogram have arrested 11 alleged members of a robbery gang during separate operations in the city’s Bayezid Bostami area, recovering firearms, ammunition and several locally made weapons.
The arrests were made during raids conducted in the Chakresho residential area and Oxygen area of Bayezid Bostami. During the operations, officers seized two locally made single-barrel guns, three rounds of ammunition, a Chinese axe, machetes, a shock machine, knives and cutters.
The information was disclosed on Thursday (14 May) by Md. Amirul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, during a press briefing held at Bayezid Bostami Police Station.
According to police, Bayezid Bostami Police Station carried out separate drives on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in connection with intelligence regarding planned criminal activities.
In the first operation, conducted late Wednesday night in the Chakresho residential area, police arrested five individuals while they were allegedly preparing to commit robbery. The arrested individuals were identified as Hasan, also known as B-Class Hasan, Moin Uddin, Yasin Arafat, Nayan and Arifur Rahman Babu.
Police said that two locally made single-barrel firearms and other improvised weapons were recovered from their possession during the raid. Officers stated that the suspects were allegedly gathered with equipment commonly associated with organised robbery attempts.
In a second operation carried out at dawn on Thursday in the Roufabad area, police arrested six more suspects. They were identified as Samrat, Robiul Hossain, Jahid Hasan, Raju, Rakibul Hasan and Abdur Rahman Bhutto Mia.
During this raid, law enforcement officers recovered a steel machete along with other locally made weapons.
Deputy Commissioner Md. Amirul Islam stated that two separate cases had been filed at Bayezid Bostami Police Station in connection with the incidents. He also said that the arrested individuals have multiple cases registered against them at different police stations.
He added that law enforcement operations against extortionists, juvenile gangs, robbers and snatchers would continue as part of wider efforts to maintain public safety and reduce organised crime in the city.
Police have not disclosed further details regarding the specific charges or the next phase of legal proceedings, but confirmed that the suspects were taken into custody following the operations and that the recovered items had been formally seized as evidence.
