Adolescent Girl Commits Suicide Over Mobile Phone Dispute

A fourteen-year-old girl, identified as Ramzana, has tragically died by suicide after her parents declined her request to purchase a new mobile telephone. The incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 4:30 pm in Ratandi village, located within the Sadar Union of Galachipa Upazila, Patuakhali. Following the discovery of the adolescent, family members and local residents recovered her from the scene and transported her to the Galachipa Upazila Health Complex, where the attending medical officer formally pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Upon receiving notification of the death, officers from the Galachipa Police Station arrived at the medical facility and the residence to take custody of the body. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Moinul, serving as the duty officer at the Galachipa Police Station, confirmed that a police detachment had inspected the site of the incident and conducted the mandatory preliminary inquest report (suratthal) to document the circumstances surrounding the death.

Background and Context of the Dispute

According to verified reports from local residents and law enforcement officials, Ramzana was the daughter of Aminul Islam, a Bangladeshi expatriate worker currently residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Ramzana was a resident of Ward No. 3 within Ratandi village under the Galachipa Sadar Union, and she was enrolled as a ninth-grade student at the Galachipa Girls’ Secondary School.

The investigation revealed that over the preceding few days, Ramzana had persistently requested her mother and her expatriate father to purchase a new mobile telephone for her personal use. In response to her repeated demands, her parents instructed her to focus on her education, promising that they would fulfill her request and purchase the mobile phone immediately after the conclusion of her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations. This compromise, however, reportedly caused significant dissatisfaction and anger for the teenager.

Sequence of Events and Police Action

On the afternoon of the incident, the other members of the household were gathered on the external veranda of the residence, engaged in conversation. Capitalising on their absence from the interior rooms, Ramzana entered her private bedroom and securely locked the entrance door from the inside.

After a notable period had elapsed, her mother, Popi Begum, approached the bedroom and called out to her daughter. Receiving no response despite multiple attempts, Popi Begum raised an alarm. Hearing her distress cries, neighbouring residents rushed to the property and forcibly broke open the locked bedroom door to gain entry. Upon entering the room, they discovered Ramzana suspended from the ceiling fan.
