New 5-Taka Note Introduced

The government has introduced a newly designed series of 5-taka currency notes featuring depictions of Bangladesh’s historical and archaeological heritage. The new note was officially brought into circulation on Tuesday, marking another step in the country’s ongoing effort to modernise its currency system while preserving national identity through artistic representation.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the redesigned note bears the signature of Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Majumder. Initially, the issuance of the new currency will be carried out through the Motijheel office of Bangladesh Bank, with distribution later expanding to other branches of the central bank across the country.

The new 5-taka note has been designed with updated security features and refined aesthetic elements. Its dimensions are 117 millimetres by 60 millimetres. The front side of the note prominently displays an image of the historic Tara Mosque of Dhaka on the left, symbolising the nation’s rich architectural heritage. At the centre, a stylised motif of the national flower, the water lily, has been incorporated to enhance visual identity and cultural representation.

On the reverse side, the note features an illustration associated with the “Graffiti 2024” theme, reflecting contemporary artistic expression and social narratives.

Enhanced security measures have been incorporated to prevent counterfeiting. These include a watermark featuring the face of the Royal Bengal Tiger, beneath which an electrotype numeral “5” and the monogram of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh are embedded. A 2-millimetre-wide security thread has also been added on the left side, which becomes clearly visible when held against light. Additionally, microprinted text reading “BANGLADESH” is repeatedly embedded on the lower front portion of the note.

Officials have confirmed that the introduction of the new note will not affect the continued circulation of existing paper currency and metal coins. All previously issued denominations will remain valid and in active use alongside the new design.
