A disturbing case has emerged in Chapainawabganj, where the body of a missing private tutor was recovered from the residence of her student, prompting police to detain three individuals for questioning.
The deceased, identified as 57-year-old Mariam Begum, was discovered wrapped and concealed inside a sack at a house in the city’s Ward No. 9, Chouka Mahalla, in the early hours of Tuesday. She was the wife of Mosaddek Hossain Kalam of Namashankarbati Ujjalpara in the same ward.
According to police and local sources, Mariam Begum had been regularly visiting the residence of Rubel Hossain, aged 35, to tutor his daughter Mithila, a fifth-grade student. On Monday morning, 18 May, she left home for her usual teaching session but failed to return, raising concern among family members.
Following the discovery of the body, police detained three people for intensive questioning: Rubel Hossain, his wife Sumi Khatun (30), and a local goldsmith named Dipak. Authorities are currently examining their possible involvement in the incident as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police officials have noted that Sumi Khatun has previously faced allegations and cases linked to incidents involving women being allegedly drugged and robbed of jewellery. Investigators are reportedly reviewing whether financial motives, particularly related to gold and valuables, could have played a role in the killing, although no formal conclusion has been reached at this stage.
Additional Superintendent of Police Wasim Firoz confirmed that the detainees are being interrogated and expressed optimism that the circumstances surrounding the killing would soon become clear. Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Ekramul Hossain stated that the body has been sent to the district hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) crime scene unit has already inspected the location, and preparations for filing a formal murder case are underway.
The incident has caused shock in the local community, particularly given the victim’s role as a private tutor who regularly visited the household.
