Scotland Manager Steve Clarke Names World Cup Squad

Scotland national football team manager Steve Clarke announced his final 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup on Tuesday. The selection marks a historic return for Scotland, who are participating in the tournament for the first time in 28 years. Grouped in Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco, and Haiti, the squad features a calculated blend of seasoned veterans and emerging young talent.

Youth and Experience

The squad dynamics present a striking contrast in age and experience. The youngest player selected is 19-year-old midfielder Finlay Curtis, whilst the oldest is 43-year-old veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

Gordon has been included despite being sidelined with a shoulder injury since January. Addressing the selection of the veteran goalkeeper, Steve Clarke remarked:

“It is always a tough decision when a goalkeeper isn’t playing regularly. But we were receiving good news from Hearts. He has been training very well and has assured us that he is completely fit. He has shown incredible mental fortitude and thoroughly deserves his place. Should any issues arise, we have alternative options available.”

In stark contrast, the teenage prospect Finlay Curtis earned his place in the senior squad following a highly productive loan spell at Kilmarnock from Rangers, scoring five goals in 14 appearances. Commenting on the youngster’s inclusion, Clarke noted:

“There is something a bit different about him that we don’t quite have in others. He has shown that he can score goals and finished the season magnificently. It is always beneficial to have a young player in the squad.”

Ross Stewart Recalled

Striker Ross Stewart has also earned a recall to the national side, having not featured for Scotland since 2022. Despite battling extensive injury problems, Stewart found form this season for Southampton, netting 11 goals in 33 appearances.

“He was in my squad a few years ago and proved he could perform at this level,” Clarke stated regarding the forward’s return. “He has suffered a great deal due to injuries, but he has been in excellent form since January. His performance against Arsenal in the Cup demonstrated his ability to make an impact on the grand stage. He is currently in form, which is why I selected him.”

Preparations and Tournament Schedule

Scotland’s World Cup preparations will begin on home soil with a warm-up fixture against Curaçao on 30 May, before the team travels to the United States. They are scheduled to face Bolivia in another preparatory match in New Jersey on 6 June.

The team will establish their tournament base camp in Charlotte, North Carolina. Scotland will initiate their Group C campaign against Haiti in Boston on 13 June, followed by a fixture against Morocco in Boston on 19 June. Their final group-stage match will be a high-profile encounter against Brazil in Miami on 24 June.
