Former international wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal has launched a scathing attack on the Pakistan national cricket team’s management, selection policies, and physical conditioning protocols. His remarks follow a historic low for the national side, which has succumbed to four consecutive Test match defeats against Bangladesh. The losing streak began with a home series whitewash in Rawalpindi and concluded with back-to-back defeats in Mirpur and Sylhet during their subsequent tour of Bangladesh.
Appearing on the YouTube cricket show The Game Plan, the 44-year-old veteran contrastingly commended the resilience of the Bangladeshi team. He noted that despite enduring political unrest and domestic protests, the touring side never lost sight of their fundamental strengths. In stark contrast, Akmal expressed immense frustration with his own country’s cricketing trajectory, asserting that the same structural flaws have been debated for nearly seven years without any tangible administrative reform.
Timeline of Pakistan’s Test Defeats Against Bangladesh
The table below records the sequence of the four consecutive Test matches where Bangladesh triumphed over Pakistan:
Condemnation of Selection Integrity and Fitness Mandates
Akmal, who earned 268 international caps for Pakistan, delivered a bleak forecast, stating that he anticipates no genuine improvement over the next four to five years unless the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) implements drastic structural changes. He argued that the current system lacks accountability and fails to maintain adequate performance benchmarks due to compromised administrative processes.
A major point of contention raised by Akmal was the perceived double standard regarding player fitness evaluations between commercial leagues and state competitions. He observed:
“During the Pakistan Super League (PSL), not a single player is ever flagged as unfit. Yet, the moment domestic first-class cricket begins, formal unfitness letters suddenly flood in. How can our cricket progress under such a flawed mindset? When the egos of individuals outside the cricketing sphere dictate terms, the sport inevitably suffers.”
Disregard for Domestic Merit and Regional Comparisons
The former cricketer heavily penalised the board’s rigid reliance on athletic testing over actual match durability. He cited examples of domestic players capable of scoring centuries or bowling 18 overs a day whose careers are effectively ended simply because they fail an arbitrary jumping drill or take an extra thirty seconds during a two-kilometre running time trial. He urged the decision-makers to reflect on their own qualifications, noting that the sport thrived in past decades without such counterproductive bureaucratic hurdles.
To illustrate his point regarding institutional integrity, Akmal drew a direct comparison with the selection philosophy of the Indian team. He pointed out that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) routinely makes ruthless selection calls, sidelining legendary performers such as Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shikhar Dhawan when team dynamics demand it. Akmal concluded that while India prioritises the collective success of the national team, the Pakistani setup continues to allow personal friendships and favouritism to dictate on-field selection.
