Pedestrian Killed After Being Hit by Bus in Satkhira

A devastating road accident in Satkhira’s Patkelghata has claimed the life of a 58-year-old pedestrian named Ananda Das. The tragic incident took place early Tuesday morning when a speeding passenger bus struck him while he was attempting to cross a busy highway, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to local residents and police authorities, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 6:20 AM near the Shakda Bridge area along the main highway within the Patkelghata Police Station jurisdiction. Ananda Das, a resident of the local Shakda village and the son of the late Krishnapada Das, was reportedly out for his usual morning routine when the accident happened. Eyewitness accounts indicate that he was trying to cross the thoroughfare when a long-distance passenger coach belonging to Sohag Paribahan, travelling from Dhaka towards Satkhira, hurtled down the road at high speed. The driver failed to brake in time, striking Das with immense force and causing fatal injuries that resulted in his death instantly at the scene.
The impact of the collision was severe enough to cause the heavy passenger vehicle to veer out of control. The bus careened off the asphalt and came to a halt beside the highway. Inside the vehicle, the sudden violent movement caused panic among the passengers, several of whom sustained minor injuries. These injured travellers later received primary medical attention at various local clinics and hospitals. Taking advantage of the ensuing chaos and confusion immediately following the crash, both the bus driver and his conductor fled the scene before law enforcement personnel could arrive.
Prompted by emergency calls from alarmed bystanders, a team from the Patkelghata Police Station rushed to the location to manage the situation and secure the area. Officers recovered the victim’s mortal remains from the site and handed them over to his grieving family members, who transported the body back to their family home for funeral arrangements.
Confirming the details of the unfortunate event, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shafiqul Islam of Patkelghata Police Station stated that the wrecked Sohag Paribahan bus remains stationary on the roadside under police observation. He added that the local authorities have officially informed the Kharnia Highway Police regarding the collision to ensure coordinated jurisdiction handling. Law enforcement teams have launched active operations to trace and apprehend the absconding driver and his assistant. Meanwhile, formal legal procedures regarding the incident are currently underway as authorities look to bring accountability to the tragic loss of life.
Road safety advocates note that highway accidents involving vulnerable pedestrians remain a persistent challenge across regional transit routes. The incident has once again highlighted urgent concerns regarding pedestrian crossings and vehicle speed management on national highways, especially during the early morning hours when visibility can be deceptive and traffic speeds tend to escalate.
