Tensions have escalated sharply in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali following the killing of a young man, triggering retaliatory attacks, vandalism, and arson that left at least eight homes torched and several others damaged. Law enforcement agencies later intervened to bring the situation under control, though the area remains tense.
According to local sources, the incident began on Saturday evening at around 9 pm in the Prok-Munshirhat area, where 23-year-old Jubayer Hossain, also known as Rakib, and his brother Rimon were returning home when they were ambushed. A group of assailants reportedly armed with sticks and iron rods attacked them without warning. Rakib sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The following day, anger over the killing spread rapidly through the locality. By late morning on Sunday, violence erupted in the Swarnapara area, where relatives and associates of the deceased allegedly targeted homes linked to suspected perpetrators. Witnesses reported widespread vandalism, looting of household belongings, and the deliberate setting of fires in at least eight residential properties belonging to families including those of Montaz Member, Rafiqullah, Parveen Akhter, and Mamun.
Fire service units and police teams were deployed shortly after the unrest began. They managed to extinguish the fires and restore a degree of order, while additional security forces were stationed in the area to prevent further clashes.
Locals say long-standing tensions have existed between two groups in Khanpur village, particularly between households in the Volahaji Bari and Swarnakar Para areas. Residents also claimed that Rakib had recently attempted to intervene and calm a verbal altercation between the rival sides at a local market, though he subsequently became embroiled in the conflict that led to his death.
