A young mason sustained serious injuries after being shot in a brazen daylight attack in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district on Tuesday morning, prompting concern over public safety in the area.
The incident occurred at around 8:30am in the Kalamiar Pol area under Hajipur Union. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Faruk Hossain, is currently receiving treatment at Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital. Medical officials have confirmed that although he suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen and knee, his condition has now stabilised following emergency surgery and intensive care observation.
According to local accounts, Faruk, a resident of Sharifpur village in Ward No. 1 of Hajipur Union and the son of Abul Kashem, works as a day labourer specialising in masonry. On the morning of the incident, he had reportedly left home for work as part of his usual routine and was standing by the roadside near a local shop when the attack took place.
Eyewitnesses reported that a CNG-run autorickshaw carrying three to four unidentified assailants arrived at the scene and stopped near the roadside. Moments after halting, the occupants allegedly opened fire directly at Faruk without warning. Several shots were fired in quick succession, striking him in the lower abdomen and knee, causing him to collapse on the road. The attackers then fled the scene immediately using the same vehicle.
The sound of gunfire caused panic among nearby residents, who rushed to the spot and found Faruk critically injured. He was swiftly rescued and transported to Noakhali General Hospital, where he underwent emergency treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that surgeons have treated his wounds and that he remains under close medical supervision. While his condition is described as stable, doctors have not ruled out further complications and continue to monitor him in the recovery unit.
Police from Begumganj Model Police Station visited the scene shortly after the incident. Preliminary assessments suggest that the attackers may have used locally available weapons, although forensic examination and further investigation are underway to determine the exact nature of the firearms used.
Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and uncover the motive behind the attack. Additional police patrols have been deployed in the area amid growing public concern over security following the incident.
Residents of the locality have expressed alarm at the audacity of the shooting, stating that such open acts of violence are rare in the area and have raised serious questions about law and order.
