A young man has died following a mob beating sparked by allegations of mobile phone theft at a mosque in Shreenagar upazila of Munshiganj district. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday in the Mattogram area under Shyamsiddhi union, drawing shock and concern from local residents.
According to local sources and police, worshippers were attending the dawn prayers at a mosque linked to the Osman Gani residence when several mobile phones reportedly went missing from the pockets of congregants. Suspicion quickly fell on a young man present at the scene. He was detained by worshippers and several local residents before being subjected to a severe assault.
Witnesses said the beating continued for some time, leaving the man critically injured. He was later found unresponsive and declared dead at the scene. His body was subsequently left near the road outside the mosque, prompting confusion and alarm as news of the incident spread through the area in the early morning hours.
Police from Shreenagar Police Station arrived shortly afterwards and recovered the body. Officers conducted an initial examination at the scene before sending the remains to Munshiganj General Hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, aged approximately 27, son of Shamsul Haque from the same locality. Local residents stated that he had previously been accused in connection with theft-related incidents, though no recent formal verdict or confirmation of guilt was mentioned by authorities at the time of reporting.
A local resident, Mintu Talukder, described the scene as distressing, saying that people initially gathered after hearing about the alleged theft and later saw an individual being beaten, only to discover he had died.
Officer-in-Charge of Shreenagar Police Station, Mohammad Juel Mia, confirmed that law enforcement responded promptly to the incident. He stated that preliminary information suggests the man was beaten after being suspected of involvement in theft at the mosque. He also noted that previous allegations and cases related to theft had been recorded against the deceased.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify those involved in the assault. Authorities have said that further legal steps will be taken following the post-mortem report.
