Man Held in Konabari Over Alleged Extortion and Assault

Police have detained a 28-year-old man in Konabari, Gazipur, over allegations that he posed as a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader, abducted a local businessman, assaulted him and demanded Tk 50,000 in extortion money.

The man, identified as Nirab, was detained at around 2pm on Sunday, 11 October, in the Palli Bidyut area along the Dhaka–Tangail highway, within the jurisdiction of Konabari Police Station. He is the son of Azim Uddin of the Rajabari area.

According to local sources, Nirab had allegedly been introducing himself to business owners and other residents as a BNP leader for some time. The allegations came to wider attention after a recent incident involving businessman Kamal Hossain, 26, in Konabari.

Nirab is accused of taking Hossain away against his will, subjecting him to physical abuse and demanding Tk 50,000. The allegations prompted the businessman to approach the police for assistance.

Hossain submitted a written complaint to Konabari Police Station on 7 October. Police subsequently detained Nirab on the basis of the complaint. The case was still being processed on Sunday, and the police had not provided further details about the alleged incident or the circumstances in which the businessman was taken away.

The detention has also raised questions about the accused’s claimed political identity. Md Babul Hossain, general secretary of the Konabari thana unit of the BNP, said Nirab did not hold any position in the local party committee.

His statement distinguishes the allegations against the individual from the activities of the local political organisation. A person’s claim to political affiliation does not, by itself, establish that they hold an official party position.

Sub-Inspector Md Rafiqul Islam of Konabari Police Station confirmed that a man named Nirab had been detained. He said legal proceedings in connection with the matter were under way but did not disclose further details.

Extortion complaints can involve demands for money backed by threats, intimidation or physical violence. In this case, the alleged demand of Tk 50,000 and the reported assault form the central elements of the complaint lodged by Hossain. The police investigation will be required to establish the circumstances of the incident and assess the evidence relating to the accusations.

The allegations have not yet been established through a court ruling. Further legal action will depend on the investigation and the evidence gathered by the authorities. Police have not announced whether any additional individuals are suspected of involvement.

For residents and business owners in the area, the case highlights the importance of reporting alleged intimidation and financial demands to law enforcement rather than relying solely on claims of political influence. The investigation remains ongoing as the authorities proceed with the case against the detained man.
