Family Clings to Hope Beneath Venezuela Rubble

Family Clings to Hope Beneath Venezuela Rubble

Two days after twin earthquakes devastated parts of Venezuela, a faint groan heard from beneath the rubble of a collapsed building has renewed hope that a 31-year-old man may still be alive. As official rescue efforts have so far failed to locate him, desperate family members have continued searching with their bare hands, refusing to abandon hope.

According to a BBC report published on Saturday, the missing man, Carlos Eduardo, became trapped when the building collapsed during the powerful earthquakes. Since then, his relatives have remained at the disaster site, tirelessly trying to reach him despite the immense danger and the enormous volume of debris.

Their determination intensified after they heard what they believe was a sign of life from beneath the wreckage.

Carlos’s cousin said the family heard a groaning sound coming from under the collapsed structure around an hour and a half earlier.

“About an hour and a half ago, or perhaps a little longer, we heard him,” he said. “He didn’t speak, but he made a groaning sound. We are waiting with great anxiety. After that groan, he did not respond again.”

The brief sound has become the family’s only source of hope after two agonising days of uncertainty. Relatives have continued calling out Carlos’s name while painstakingly removing rubble by hand, believing that every minute could make a difference in reaching him alive.

Following reports from the family that sounds had been heard beneath the debris, a specialised Spanish rescue team arrived at the site to conduct a search. Rescue personnel deployed specially trained search dogs to inspect the collapsed building in an effort to detect signs of human life.

Despite the operation, the team was unable to confirm the presence of any survivors beneath the rubble. After completing the search, the rescuers left the site without recovering Carlos or identifying further evidence that anyone remained alive inside the collapsed structure.

The outcome has done little to discourage Carlos’s relatives. Refusing to give up, they have continued their search using only their hands to clear concrete, bricks and other debris, driven by the belief that he may still be trapped but alive.

Large-scale earthquake rescues often become increasingly difficult as time passes. Survivors can face life-threatening injuries, dehydration and limited access to air beneath collapsed buildings, making rapid rescue efforts critical. Nevertheless, emergency response teams around the world have occasionally recovered people alive several days after major earthquakes, particularly when air pockets have formed within the debris.

For Carlos’s family, those rare examples continue to fuel hope. They remain convinced that the groan they heard was a genuine sign of life and are determined to continue searching for him despite the physical exhaustion and emotional strain.

The twin earthquakes caused widespread destruction, leaving buildings damaged or destroyed and prompting emergency response operations in the affected areas. Rescue teams have been working to locate survivors while assessing the extent of the damage, although conditions at many collapsed structures remain challenging.

As the hours continue to pass, Carlos Eduardo’s family remain at the scene, clinging to the hope that the voice they heard beneath the rubble will ultimately lead them to a successful rescue. Their persistence reflects the resilience often seen in the aftermath of natural disasters, where families refuse to give up even when the odds appear overwhelmingly difficult.
