Metropolitan Police Crack Down on Capital Traffic Violations

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched an extensive citywide enforcement drive, filing 2,999 cases against non-compliant drivers across the capital. Conducted on Tuesday, 6 October, the operations spanned all eight municipal traffic divisions as part of ongoing efforts to tackle chronic gridlock, restore road safety, and enforce transit regulations.

Throughout the day-long initiative, officers targeted a diverse mix of private and commercial transport. Penalised vehicles included private motorcycles, public buses, compressed natural gas (CNG) auto-rickshaws, medium-duty cargo trucks, and covered vans. Beyond monetary fines and formal summonses, authorities took direct punitive action against severe offenders, impounding 639 vehicles into official dump yards and towing away a further 286 using heavy wreckers.

Geographical distribution data reveals a striking disparity in enforcement figures across the city’s divisions. Gulshan division recorded the highest volume of prosecutions by a considerable margin, filing 855 cases—accounting for nearly 29 per cent of the total day’s infractions. Wari division registered the second-highest tally with 505 cases, followed closely by commercial hubs in Motijheel with 462 cases and Uttara division with 406.

In contrast, traffic divisions covering western and central corridors recorded comparatively moderate numbers. Officers in Mirpur logged 318 infractions, Tejgaon division registered 199 cases, and Lalbagh recorded 146. Ramna division accounted for the lowest total of the drive, issuing just 108 cases. Detailed breakdowns regarding specific offence categories—such as illegal parking, signal jumping, or driving without valid permits—were not disclosed by municipal authorities.

Dhaka’s municipal transit network faces severe everyday disruption due to unauthorized parking, lane discipline breaches, and unlicenced commercial fleet operations. DMP representatives reiterated that field enforcement drives, routine vehicular checks, and targeted impoundments will continue indefinitely across all primary thoroughfares. Police officials emphasised that while punitive actions remain essential to deter reckless behaviour, achieving permanent road discipline will ultimately require greater compliance and awareness from both commercial operators and everyday commuters alike.
