Terror Plot Foiled in Mumbai After Mastermind Targets Religious Procession

An immense tragedy was narrowly averted in India’s commercial capital, Mumbai, following the arrest of a man attempting to distribute lethal poison to thousands of participants during a religious procession. Local authorities apprehended the suspect red-handed on Friday 26 June as he distributed chemical-laden capsules during a traditional Tazia march. The individual, identified as Faiyaz Premji, subsequently confessed to police that he had orchestrated a calculated plot to kill at least 15,000 people.

The alarm was raised in the Byculla district of the city when nearly a dozen individuals fell suddenly ill after consuming the capsules offered by Premji. Subsequent laboratory analysis revealed that the pills were packed with zinc phosphide. This highly destructive chemical compound is typically utilised as a rodenticide to exterminate rats and other pests. Following his capture, a local metropolitan court remanded Premji into police custody for two days on Saturday 27 June to allow detectives to uncover the full scope of the conspiracy.

Deceptive Distribution Tactics Near Commemorative Sites

According to investigators, the plot unfolded near the Rehmatabad Cemetery on Reay Road during the Ashura commemorations. Capitalising on the dense crowds, Premji moved through the gathering whilst distributing the capsules under a false pretext. He aggressively marketed the lethal pills as legitimate painkillers and immunity-boosting supplements.

The deception quickly turned critical when at least eleven people swallowed the capsules and began experiencing severe physical distress. One of the victims, Salman Sayyed, reported agonizing stomach cramps and violent vomiting within moments of ingestion. The affected individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency services. Medical staff have since confirmed that all the victims are out of danger and recovering well under close observation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayanta Meena stated that Premji had systematically laced the capsules with zinc phosphide without holding any medical credentials or official authorization. A swift police sweep led to the seizure of 14,900 filled capsules remaining in the suspect’s possession, though officers believe a substantial number had already been handed out. Forensic teams also discovered that Premji had placed further orders for 30,000 empty capsule shells and 50 kilograms of phosphorus to scale up his operation.

Alert Volunteers Prevent Mass Casualty Event

A catastrophic loss of life was prevented due to the vigilance of three female community volunteers. One of the women noticed Premji’s suspicious behavior as he distributed the medication to unsuspecting pilgrims. The trio moved swiftly to intercept the suspect, physically restraining him whilst alerting nearby police officers. Simultaneously, the volunteers used the procession’s loudspeakers to broadcast emergency warnings, urging the public to immediately discard any capsules received from strangers.

During interrogation at the Byculla Police Station, Premji explicitly admitted his motives, bluntly telling detectives that his goal was to execute a mass casualty event targeting 15,000 attendees. Law enforcement officials have registered a criminal case under Section 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which penalises the administration of poison or hurtful substances with intent to commit an offence. Counter-terrorism units and intelligence agencies have joined the investigation to determine whether Premji was operating as a lone wolf or acting on behalf of an organized extremist network.

The Lethal Nature of Zinc Phosphide

Zinc phosphide is classified as an exceptionally dangerous chemical agent that poses an immediate threat to human life upon ingestion. When the substance enters the human digestive tract, it reacts violently with gastric acids to release phosphine gas. This toxic gas enters the bloodstream, causing rapid and catastrophic failure of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.

Medical experts warn that there is no specific antidote available for zinc phosphide poisoning. Treatment relies entirely on immediate hospitalization, aggressive decontamination, and supportive therapies, often requiring mechanical ventilation to keep the patient alive whilst the body processes the toxin.
